Pattaya Floating Market Cares for Kids
After lunch, all kids were taken to feed

Forty children from the Rainbow Pencil Group Bangkok
recently enjoyed lunch and a day out of the city at the Pattaya Floating
Market.
Marketing Manager Klaus Jurgen greeted the students and
provided them a meal of noodle soup, fried rice, fruit and a shaved-ice
dessert.
After lunch, all kids were taken to feed a 115-year-old
elephant - one of the oldest in Thailand - before going on the Skywalker
Sling Adventure. Many, however, were too scared to climb up the 15 m.
attraction.
“The main objective in providing these kids free lunch
and games here at Pattaya Floating Market was to return something to the
community after the Pattaya Floating Market has been so warmly and
continuously welcomed and supported by the community since it opened two
years ago,” Jurgen said. “The market is not a private company solely looking
to make money, but also does charity work.”
Teacher and group leader Pix Chanon Boonduang noted that
her students are poor and don’t have many chances to enjoy such excursions.
“Their parents mostly work in construction and don’t have
enough time to take care of their kids,” she said. “Therefore, the Rainbow
Pencil Group voluntarily offers their parents help in taking care of their
kids, including teaching and providing good time in order to keep these kids
away from improper situations.”
After the children explored the market and its
attractions, Pix presented three t-shirts to Jurgen as a thank you and then
led the kids back to Bangkok at 3 p.m.

Successful second operation for
first beneficiary of Dusit Smiles
Dusit Thani Pattaya and Operation Smile teams are
seen with Baby Singto and his family when they visited him at the
hospital in Sattahip after he underwent the second surgery to correct
his facial deformity.
Four months after Nong Singto underwent the first
operation to correct his facial deformity in March this year, doctors
successfully performed the second surgery and they say another procedure
will be done early next year. Because Nong Singto was born with a more
complicated facial defect, he needs more than one surgery to completely
transform not only his facial feature but also his life.
Nong Singto, whose full name is Kongphop Sumarn, is
the first child beneficiary of Dusit Smiles, a Corporate Social
Responsibility program launched by Dusit International at the beginning
of 2010. Since then, hotels, resorts, businesses and education units of
the leading Thai hospitality brand and its entire Dusit Family of
employees have initiated various fund-raising activities to help support
operations for children who desperately need the simple but
life-changing surgery under Operation Smile organization. The operation
costs approximately US$240 per child.
His parents told Operation Smiles (Thailand) and
Dusit Thani Pattaya that they felt the pain that their nine-month baby
had after he came out of surgery at Somdej Phranagchao Sirikit Hospital
in Sattahip, Chonburi. But they also added that these procedures will
eventually be over and soon, their son will be able to live a normal
life. They expressed their heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Operation
Smiles and the entire Dusit International for giving them the chance to
help build a new life coupled with fresh beginnings for their baby boy.

Victor and the children at Huay Yai.
The first week they stayed at the university campus,
with lectures, social activities, visits to Pattaya, etc. On Thursday
the tourism students went out to local attractions including the Food
and Hoteliers Expo at PEACH, the Royal Cliff Hotel and the Floating
Market where they were taken round by manager Klaus Jergen. They loved
the variety of products on sale, and laughed when they had their feet
nibbled by fish. They also enjoyed the zip-line over the lake, feeding a
114 year old elephant and the gentle boat ride through the market. The
students are already planning another visit to the market.
Svetlana, Panit and the Russian bear.
The business group visited many contrasting local
sites, including Ban Amphur market, the Portofino condominiums, the
local school and temple in Huay Yai and they learnt about some of the
local agriculture (cassava, pineapples and rubber) and industry
including charcoal burning. One of the most interesting visits was to
Worasan Farm, Hua Nong village, where they saw Chonburi Diamond, a
beautiful prize winning bull.
The students have spent a weekend on Koh Samet and
then moved to the Sea Breeze Resort in Jomtien.

PSC helping Fountain of Life Children’s Center
William Macey
The Jesters for many years have supported the
Fountain of Life Children’s Center, run by the Good Shepherd Sisters,
and Pattaya Sports Club has followed suit for the last 7 years.
The children have eaten and are now ready to wash up.
The Good Shepherd order came to Thailand in 1965 and
collected about 100 children from the slums of Pattaya. These are
children who do not have documentation as regards their birth so cannot
attend school. They receive about 4 hours of education each day and are
also provided with food from the devoted staff.
The children, whose ages range from 3 - 7 years, are
picked up from various sites around Pattaya and the two vans make two
trips, morning and evening. The children are delighted to know they are
off for a day at the centre but the staff establish some discipline by
having the children clean their teeth and wash their hands after every
meal.
The staff try to establish their identities to enable
them to obtain a birth certificate thereby being able to attend school
at a later date.
Pattaya Sports Club has been helping the Fountain of Life for the
past 7 years.
