Don’t mess with Thai heads
In Thailand, the head is the most revered part of the
body, and to touch it, either affectionately or aggressively, is a social
taboo, especially if you do not know the person. Mr. Wayne den Donge (sic),
53, a Belgian tourist found out the hard way on December 19th while drinking
at a beer bar in Pattaya.
On that night, Donge entered Pattaya Police station in a seemingly
intoxicated state, with his face bleeding profusely. He complained to Pol.
Captain Prasarn Feukfon, the officer on duty, that he had been attacked by
someone he thought may have been a Katoey. Donge told the officer that he
had accidentally pulled the hair of a long haired fellow, thinking it was a
Katoey (transvestite). The person then turned and hit him so hard he fell
from his chair. He told the captain that he did not know why this had
happened, as he was generally a good person and had only jokingly pulled the
person’s hair.
He went on to say that he had arisen from the ground in a punch drunk state
and not alcohol intoxicated state. He looked around to find the person who
had so rudely fed him a knuckle sandwich. Since he could not find this
person, he was reporting the incident to the police.
The police told Donge that they could register his complaint and look for
the attacker if he desired it. Donge thought for a few moments and then told
Captain Prasarn, “I’d like a little time to think about it first. I’ll come
back when I’ve decided.” He complained to police that he couldn’t see why
pulling someone’s hair was such a big problem, and she (he) was so pretty
too. He then arose and walked out of the station.
