Pattaya police used an Apple iPhone’s built-in tracking software to
arrest the alleged thief who snatched a Chinese tourist’s handbag.
Narong Pimkaw, 26, was arrested at a Soi Chalermprakiet 15 hotel shortly
after he and a friend allegedly robbed Wang Meng, 30, and her boyfriend Liv
Yuan, 35. Upon going to Pattaya police station, the Chinese couple fired up
the “Find My iPhone” app on another Apple device and showed police where the
phone was.
As so often the case, the suspects didn’t have a clue. Narong still had the
iPhone 5 in his pocket, turned on and with its original software.
Police said Narong, of Trat, admitted to the bag snatch. He said he rented
the hotel room to restore the phone to factory settings, but didn’t know
how. Current iPhone software makes it impossible to wipe phones without the
owner’s password.
