Young woman perishes in house fire
Ms. Varaporn Thai-Am, 20, received severe electrical shock when she
attempted to use buckets of water to extinguish an electrical fire that had
started in a group of houses on Sukhumvit Road in Banglamung. Friends found
her and rushed her to Banglamung Hospital, where doctors used every method
possible to help her. Unable to revive her, she succumbed and later died.
The Fire Department sent six water trucks to the scene, but by the time they
arrived, the fire had already spread to 5 homes. Using fire breaks to stop
the blaze from spreading further, firemen were able to contain the fire
within about 20 minutes, but not before all 5 houses were razed.
Fire Department officials questioned Ms. Lek Klai-Am, 49, whose home was in
the area. She reported that all the dwellers were out on a construction site
when the fire began. When told of the fire by a neighbour, they rushed back
to douse the blaze. Yet, when they arrived, they found they had been too
late. All their personal belongings had been completely destroyed, including
electrical goods, televisions, radios, rice cookers and VCR’s. All other
personal goods, which were the only possessions these people had, were also
destroyed.
Officials speculated that the fire was caused by a short circuit in the
electrical wiring.
