Racy start to Sunday Quiz
“What was the name of the theater where President Lincoln
was shot and killed?” “Which country is home to Varig Airlines?”
New question setter, Anne Schofield, set some toughies in round one. But
bars rose to the occasion, as usual, and averaged a good 71%. Mick’s Place
and Pleasure Dome both won their matches with an impressive 84%, showing
excellent all round general knowledge. Mick’s even managed the most
difficult question of the night, “Which British prime minister was the first
to be born in this century?”
Close on the top bars’ heels came Palmer’s, last season’s champions, with
82%. Scoring full marks on the never popular science and nature round, they
are a bar to watch out for. But the remaining bars are still in the race,
with thirteen weeks to go in the season.
The answer to this week’s questions are “Ford’s”,
“Brazil”, and “Sir Alec Douglas Home”.
The public is invited to join the fun every Sunday night in the Quiz League.
Interested parties need only show up Sunday nights at 8:30 p.m. at the
venues listed in the Sports Roundup column of Pattaya Mail.

compete in team competition for the 1996 Chonburi Regional Tennis
Championships this weekend. from November 30 - December 1 on the courts of
the Royal Cliff Beach Resort.
Hailed as the area’s largest tennis tournament, teams from towns all over
Chonburi District will compete for the title of the province’s best tennis
players. Mekong, Carlsberg, Wilson, and Bangkok Pattaya Hospital have all
signed up to sponsor the event.
The grand opening will take place on Saturday, November 30 at 8:30 a.m. at
the Royal Cliff Beach Resort. Chonburi’s Governor Sujarit Pajchimanant is
expected to preside.
Wednesday Quiz scores improving
“Which is the only letter of the alphabet not contained
in the name of any US state?” “What event in the late 1940s caused a change
in the printing of British coinage?”
Last week’s average scores in the bars was almost 81%, the highest of the
season. Fawlty Towers won the overall quiz, but were hotly trailed by wizard
insight at Bob’s, Palmer’s and Britannia. Remaining bars also did well, and
it is good news to see newcomers Shamrock steadily im-proving their grades.
Its worth repeating that the Wednesday Quiz has a
different scoring system from Sunday’s. On Wednesday, the points gained
relate to rank order and not to individual correct answers.
To join Pattaya’s booming intelligentsia, turn up at any if the bars just
before 8:30 p.m. on a Wednesday.
Answers to the above questions are: the letter “Q” and Indian Independence.

Sports Corner wins pool championship
(L to R) Dang, Nicky, Captain
Chris, Robert, and Rod of the Pattaya Pool League Championship team from
Sports Corner.
Sports Corner earned the distinction of being the best
pool shooting team in Pattaya when they made it through the first season of
the new Pattaya Pool League with only one loss. Along the way, they only
lost one beer leg as well. The sharp shooters on the baize were awarded the
league championship trophy at the end of season awards presentation party on
Thursday night, November 21 at Sports Corner in Sunnee Plaza.
Penthouse made a race out of it, finishing second only 7 points back.
The new league will begin play sometime in early December. A meeting will be
held at Sports Corner in Sunnee Plaza on Monday, December 2, starting around
6:30 p.m.. All bars who might be interested in joining the league can come
along to the meeting, or contact Rod or Dang at Sports Corner or Rommel at
Beer Put on Pattaya Third Road.
The league is not only looking for new teams, but is also looking to start a
new format. In the new format, two divisions will be set up. A
“professional” three person team division for the better pool players, and a
regular division for the less adept. At the end of each season, the team
winning the regular division will have the option of moving up into the pro
division, while the last place team in the pro division might get sent down
to division two.

Ken Cooke becomes AGS Bogey champ
In the unique Alternative Golf Society “Bogey” format,
where each golfer competes in match play against the course, Ken Cooke
finished 5 up to win the coveted “Knotted Putter” trophy. Playing off his 36
handicap, Ken finished 5 shots better than the Pattaya Country Club course
in the windy conditions on Wednesday, November 20, 1996.
Lewis “Woody” Underwood finished second, bettering the course by 2 holes.
By far the shot of the day came on the back side of the course when Richard
Livingston shot a hole in one on the par three 16th. After the tournament,
Richard was off wandering around in a state of happy delirium and couldn’t
be reached for comment.
On the other end of the spectrum, Murray Kerr, normally one of the area’s
better golfers, landed his tee shot on the same green, then proceeded to six
putt for a quadruple bogey. No problem in the “Bogey” format, he only lost
one hole to the course after the minor hiccup.
Another normally good golfer, Stephen Beard, started the day with a rather
unique approach to his first tee shot. Instead of proceeding forward, as
most golfers try to do, Stephen’s tee shot landed about thirty yards behind
him, lost in the bushes. Seems it hit the concrete “stream” in front of the
tee box and ricocheted somewhere into nowhere land.
The Alternate Golf Society meets every Wednesday from the Hare House
Restaurant and Flop House on Soi Post Office. All golfers are welcome,
transportation leaves around 8:30 a.m. This week’s tourney (December 4) will
be the Alternative Golf Society Monthly Medal round at Phoenix Country Club.

George Meigh shines is PGS medal
George Meigh once again finished atop the leader board in
the Pattaya Golf Society Monthly Medal round at Khao Kheow Country Club on
Tuesday, November 19, 1996. Meigh compiled a total of 37 Stableford points
off his 21 handicap. George put together 6 pars and 21 points on the first
nine alone.
Arthur Bailey finished second with 34 Stableford points. Norman Brooks
placed third, also with 34 points, but lost on count back to Bailey.
Alan finished fourth with 33 points. Colin Morgan came in fifth with 32
points. Dickey Barbe, also with 32 points, was relegated to sixth after
count back.
Bill Kennedy didn’t finish amongst the leaders, but he did produce the shot
of the day. Kennedy’s tee shot off the par three 5th landed just 6 inches
from the hole.
Splinter Golf Group
The Splinter Golf Group from the Green Bottle has now
been able to put together an official list of golfers who have earned the
right to carry a legitimate USGA Handicap with the Splinter Group. This
should entitle all those on the list to play with any USGA based club in the
world on an even basis. Anyone wishing to obtain the same privilege may
contact any committee member of the Splinter Golf Group or John Cole at the
Green Bottle.
The procedure for obtaining an official USGA Handicap with the Splinter Golf
Group is as follows: 1) Obtain a Splinter Golf Group member card. 2) Post 5
scores with the Splinter Group. 3) Process All rounds with the Splinter Golf
Group Handicap Committee.
Improve your Bridge
by Barrie Kenyon
Let us look at this modest collection. You hold:
Spades Ace 6
Hearts 9 3 2
Diamonds 7 4
Clubs King 8 6 5 3 2
What do you bid if your partner opens one club? You simply raise him to two
clubs. This is a limit bid, showing 6 to 9 points usually, and a liking for
your partner’s suit. Even if the opener has a short club suit, sometimes
called the phony club, he will be pleased with your six card holding.
What do you bid if your partner opens one diamond? You say no trump. It
would be wrong to bid two clubs, because your hand is too weak. You really
need ten points to raise to the next level and you have only seven.
What do you bid if your partner opens one heart? It depends on the system
you are using. If you know your partner has five hearts, the five card major
system, then best bid two hearts. If you are not sure, in the British Acol
system for example, it is preferable to bid one no trump.
What do you bid if your partner opens one spade? You respond one no trump.
The fact that you have the Ace in that suit is helpful, but you do not have
enough spades to raise to the two level.
What do you bid if your partner opens one no trump? Again it depends on the
system you are using. If you know your partner has 12 to 14 high card points
(the weak no trump), you must pass and hope for the best. Trying to rescue
your partner by bidding two clubs is likely to lead to all sorts of
disasters because he will go marching on into the stratosphere. If you know,
however, that your partner has 16 to 18 high card points (the strong no
trump), you could try two no trumps. The hope here is that your partner will
be able to establish your long clubs to get rid of his rubbish.
The point about all the above responses is that you told the truth with a
very limited hand. Each of your replies was a limit bid designed to stop
your partner getting too excited. With a very powerful hand, he might choose
to go on, but that is a matter for him. The other point is that you must
agree with your partner, before the game starts, to some basic ground rules
about the system you and he will use. Otherwise, take up snap as a matter of
urgency.

Dragomir overpowers Tamarine at Volvo Open
Ruxandra Dragomir from Romania ended the “Cinderella”
tournament of Thai hopeful Tamarine Tanasugarn with a powerful straight sets
victory in the singles finals of the 1996 Volvo Women’s Open Tennis
tournament at the Dusit Resort in North Pattaya on Sunday, November 24.
Ruxandra
Dragomir of Romania lofts the trophy she worked so hard to earn, the Volvo
Women’s Open Singles Championship.
Tamarine had made it to her first WTA by upsetting many higher seeded
players throughout the week, including a 4-6, 7-5, 4-0 (retired) semi-final
win over world #44 Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia. Her improbable run toward
the championship was halted when she went up against the top seed of the
tournament, world #32 Ruxandra Dragomir. Although Tamarine played well, the
powerful Romanian only needed two sets to finish her off.
Tamarine suffered slow starts throughout the tournament, and the final was
no exception. Dragomir’s powerful serve and volley enabled the top seed to
jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the opening set. Tamarine battled back,
taking the first set to a tie break, but it appeared as though she peaked
early, and lost the tie break 7-4.
Tamarine also may have fallen prey to the pressure, as she once again fell
behind early in the second set. Down 3-1, Tamarine once again battled back
to even the set at 3 all, but couldn’t hold off the Romania, eventually
losing the set and the match by a final score of 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.
The feisty Romanian, meanwhile, seemed in a hurry to get the match over
with. A few times during play, she let her temper get the better of her and
sent the ball flying wildly out of the stadium. She calmed down in time to
finish in a very sportsmanlike manor, and even told the gathered crowd,
“I’ll definitely be back nest year...if I don’t make it to the championships
(WTA season ending championships). My goal is to make it to the
championships.”
The win earned Dragomir US$17,700 (442,500 baht) and will probably vault her
world ranking up to about 25th. Tamarine earned US$8,350 (208,750 baht), and
will most likely boost her world ranking to about 79th. If so, it will be
the first time a Thai player will have broken into the top 100.
In the doubles open final, Japan’s Yuka Yoshida and Miho Saeki romped over
Nana Miyaki from Japan and Tina Krizan from Slovakia 6-2, 6-3 in what turned
out to be a bizarre ending to a great tournament.
With Loy Krathong celebrations starting to reach a peak outside the stadium,
the four young tennis stars had to endure nerve wracking fireworks, which
continued to get louder and more frequent as the match progressed. Add in
bats swooping down on the middle of the court to catch mosquitoes and some
idiot in the stands shining a laser pen on the referee and contestants, the
foursome did a remarkable job just being able to complete the match.
For Nana Miyaki, it was her second doubles final in as many years, each with
a different partner. Unfortunately for her, the results were similar after
both contests.
Geoffrey Rowe, who is largely responsible for bringing women’s top tennis
professionals to Thailand, was once again the tournament director of
Thailand’s only World Tour Tennis event. The WTA Volvo Women’s Open was
sanctioned by the Women’s International Professional Tennis Council, the
Women’s Tennis Association, and the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand.

Can-Am returns
The 16th annual Can-Am Invitational Golf Tournament will
return to Siam Country Club tomorrow, Saturday, November 30, 1996.
As usual, a huge turnout is expected to compete for the large amount of
prizes up for grabs. The first place winner will receive a round trip ticket
from Bangkok to any city in Canada or the United States that is served by
Canadian Airlines.
A welcoming reception will be held on Friday night before the tournament at
the Dusit Resort in North Pattaya. At the reception, competitors will learn
tee off times for the following day.
Players will tee off in two separate “groups”, both in shotgun start format.
The first group will tee off at 6:30 a.m. and the second at noon. Both
groups are asked to arrive at least forty five minutes before their
scheduled tee off time. Players missing their 6:30 a.m. tee off will not be
guaranteed a spot in the afternoon group, due to the shear numbers of
players that turn out for this popular event.
Technical prizes will be awarded for achievements on every hole, including
prizes for long drives, nearest the pins on par threes, closest to the
flags, closest to the lines, closest to the water, longest first putt holed
on #’s 9 and 18, straightest drive, and a birdie hole.
After the competition there will be an awards presentation party and buffet
at the Dusit Resort beginning around 7:30 p.m. At the party, many lucky draw
prizes will be awarded along with the technical prizes.
