The 3rd round in the national ‘Amazing New Idea and
Amazing New Food’ contest was held at the Central Festival Center in
Pattaya last weekend. With the northern and central regional competitions
completed, over 150 cooks and chefs from the eastern region sharpened their
knives and racked up the spice for a fun-filled event.

R) Wisoot Withayathankorn and the three winners, Kajeerat Fakchim, Panida
Aumphankarn from Lorkor Restaurant, Sawai Phumpakwan from Sim Siam Hotel and
Worawit Tungphirootham, managing director of Cheer (Thailand) Co., Ltd.
The contest was sponsored by Thai Vegetable Oil Public
Co. Ltd., Thai Ha Company, the TAT and the Ministry of Public Health.
Crowds of drooling onlookers watched as competitors
cooked up a storm in 3 categories; General Public, Restaurants and
Hotel/Restaurants. Finalists in each of the three categories won trophies
and cash prizes and will go on to Bangkok to compete for the grand national
title.
Ten finalists waited on the edge of their seats while the
panel of judges deliberated for an hour. The winner of the General Public
category went to Kajeerat Fakchim who’s sumptuous ‘kanom jim nauakhun’
- a Chinese noodle recipe - was irresistible. The Lorkor Restaurant won the
Restaurant category with a spectacular fish and herb ‘tom yam’ soup, and
judges’ palates were most impressed with the unique spicy herb salad
recipe from Sim Siam Hotel which won the prize in the Hotel/Restaurant
category.
Each of the winners will represent the region in the national competition
held in Bangkok later this year as well as vie for the grand trophy from HRH
Princess Sirindhorn, a large cash prize and the title of best cook in the
kingdom.
Windsurfing regatta and mountain bike races also on the docket

The much anticipated 2nd Annual Longboat Races will be
held November 16 and 17 at Mabprachan Reservoir, and this year the
festivities will also include windsurfing and mountain bike racing. Local
product booths and food stalls will also be set up throughout the area.
Pattaya’s
2nd Annual Longboat Races are coming up on November 16 and 17, and
organizers have a whole host of activities planned for the event.
The longboat races will be broadcast around the nation.
Rowers will compete for two main trophies: The first trophy is in honor of
HRH Princess Sirindhorn and the second in honor of HSH Princess Soamsawalee.
The races will be held in 2 categories: teams of 30
rowers and teams of 55 rowers. The races are a reminder of days gone by when
many of the villages along the banks of Thailand’s waterways conducted
their day-to-day-business. The races are a tradition of athletic prowess and
are held during the kingdom’s rainy season as the rivers burst their banks
and flood surrounding areas.
In addition to the longboat races, a windsurfing
competition will be held including men and women’s formula categories and
a special category for novices.
On land mountain bike races are also planned in 10, 20
and 40 kilometer categories. Stalls and booths will set up selling products
from the ‘One Village, One Product’ project.
The activities as a whole are an attempt to attract more
foreign visitors to the region and further promote Thai culture and customs.
Anyone interested in competing in any of the events you can call the
Nongprue district administration and on 038 249 820, 038 734 934-5 or the
Tourism Authority of Thailand, Central Region 3 Office on Pratamnak Hill.
Somchai Khunpluem, chief district governor of Saensuk
District, presided over the opening of the Star Dice Beach Club situated on
Beach Road near the Hard Rock Hotel. The complex belongs to one of the most
successful businessman in Pattaya and the eastern region, Sansern
Luknormaitong.
Somchai
Khunpluem (center), chief district governor of Saensuk District, presided
over the opening of the Star Dice Beach Club on Beach Road.
On November 1st close friends, distinguished guests, and
excitement-lovers attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and were served with
Thai and Chinese food and delicacies from the sea cooked by skilful Thai
chefs.
Sansern said the beach club will welcome all types of
celebrations, birthday parties, seminars, and meetings. He said, “As the
economy is still shaky and with the restricted closing time being tightened
by authorities, the complex will be welcomed by those who want to dine out
late at night. The entertainment inside would be closed at 2.00 a.m. as
usual but customers can continue their meals outdoors. This will conform to
the laws but still satisfy the needs of residents and tourists in town.”
Sansern said the Star Dice Beach Club is the first one-stop entertainment
venue in the eastern region that will keep visitors entertained all night
through.
The Australian Thai Chamber of Commerce, ‘AusCham’,
held their final Seaboard Sundowner networking evening for the year last
Friday evening at the Marriott Resort & Spa.
AusCham
members meet with Miles Kupa (3rd from left), Australian Ambassador to
Thailand.
The night, co-sponsored by the Marriott and Kirwan
Industrial Services drew one of the largest attendances for the year on the
Eastern Seaboard.
There were plenty of movers and shakers who showed up
including Pat Gosset from Asian Tiger Transpo and Glenn Mills, Thailand
manager for JVK as well as the bubbly JVK manager-Eastern Seaboard Sasipean
Sripreang. Peter Stirling and Paradee Vilaisit of Milan Crosse in Bangkok
were seen milling about, working the room. Grant Atkinson and Warunee Sakha
of Rocket Products International, manufacturers of filmmaking materials
traveled all the way from Rayong to attend the ‘Sundowners’ evening.
The weather cleared allowing the crowd to do what the
Aussie’s do best - enjoy a cold beer and some great Australian wine and
get on with business in a relaxed atmosphere.
The Australian Ambassador to Thailand H.E. Miles Kupa
showed for the event, taking time out from his many diplomatic duties to
chat with the business community.
When asked on how things were shaping up for Australians
in Thailand and the growing pressures since the tragic bombing in Bali the
ambassador said, “We had had to tighten security at the embassy, and issue
government travel warnings but that’s the only real difference that I can
say at this point in time.”
However, the ambassador did indicate that while there is
an air of caution he did not foresee any serious threats to Australians in
Thailand.
One of the sponsors of the last Sundowner, Steele
Lambrinos, managing director of Kirwan Industries and his team were out in
force. Steele spoke of the company’s expansion in the market, “We are
proud to be associated with the Pattaya Marriott Resort & Spa and hope
to develop and strengthen our association with other Marriott hotels
throughout Thailand.”
Kirwan Industrial Services has recently expanded its
operations into mainland China. The company is finalizing arrangements to
sign a 15-year agreement with one of China’s largest technical cleaning
companies. Kirwan has also secured a long-term contract with the Volkswagen
plant in Shanghai pending the finalization a joint venture, and have also
made inroads to Indonesia and Malaysia.
The Chamber recently celebrated it 25th anniversary in Thailand. As part
of the AustCham’s 25th Anniversary a community services project was also
completed with Opening of Ban Khao Din School Library in Ban Bueng the
following day.
