Santa arrives early at Pattaya Sports Club 24th Members Monthly Tournament
Pattaya Country Club Friday November 1
Once upon a time in an Exotic Wonderland far, far away,
there existed a group of beings who decided they would give up all their
free time to make certain all their fellow club members had a Christmas at
least monthly and if possible 14 times a year. They decided that as far as
possible they would do it all for free, now wouldn’t that be a fine thing?
They decided to call this philanthropic society P.S.C. and decided 12 of
these Christmases would be run by Father Santa Herbie Claws and his merry
band of Elves led by Big Elf Joe, Talkative Elf Alan and Diddy Elf Bernie.
Unfortunately, after much consideration, Santa Herbie decided he had to put
on a charge of 100 baht because he and his Elves spent so much time running
around his reindeer ate too much food.
All 4
men’s winners (L to R) D Flight Colin Mathers, C Flight Gerry Carpenter, B
Flight Phil Taylor, and A Flight David Claas.

place finishers in each flight (note the co-ordination) - some not overly
enthusiastic about revealing their identity.
This group of kind and caring beings, who worked until
0200 the night before, as elves do to get ready, decided that for their 24th
act of madness they would take their participants, all 108 of them, to
Pattaya Country Club and get them to use their umbrellas as it always rains
on Santa Herbie’s Parade at Pattaya and guess what, it poured it down as
usual, but what’s a free shower on a fine day like this?
The registration went very smoothly under the expert
control of Santa and Elf Big Joe, and all 108 competitors were soon on
either the 1st or 10th tees as both tees were used to get the players
underway, and bring on the rain. It’s been a wet week.
The course was in fine condition, a compliment to Pattaya
C.C. and the rain was sporadic so golfers could keep playing. The rain as
nearly always was warm and cooled the air down, what a fine way to pass a
day, all this, no work and Santa waiting at the end with his big sack of
prezzies. Who said you can’t have your cake and eat it?
Ladies
winner Noonit Tawapee being presented by Elf Diddy Bernie.

After a great round of golf, where the only problem was
that Pattaya C.C. slipped groups in the middle and slowed everything down,
Santa and the Elves beavered away to make sense out of 108 scorecards filled
in by Mensa candidates and a host of pins that were illegible after 5 hours
out in the rain. However, PSC has the technology; it’s called intuition
and Herbie’s eagle eyes.
What about the results one might ask, well there were a
lot of them, and then when the results were over there were a lot of lucky
draws, with some very nice draw prizes. Xmas comes but 14 times a year with
P.S.C., best value anywhere.
The scores on the doors as usual proved that the A flight
scored the least points and the D flight scored the most, with B & C
rising correspondingly, a trend seen at practically all competitions.
In the A flight David Claas won with 41 points followed
by in second Dave Stockman with 39 points and in third Clive Bruce with 38
points, as usual good tight golf from the better players.
In the B flight the scores lifted slightly with the
winner Phil Taylor having 42 points, second Wayne Koch having 40 points and
the third the old favourite Ebrahim with 39.
In the C flight the scores again lifted slightly with the
winner Gerry Carpenter scoring 43 points, second Bob (what no photo) Benda
having 42 points and Nora Hellesjodt coming third with 41 points.
In the D flight, guess what, you really have to score
well in this flight to win. The winner with 45 points was Colin Mathers,
second on count back was Hwan Yong Hwang on 42 points and third was Ken
Leadstone also on 42 points. The moral of these scores is that if you
can’t score a lot of points then play in the A flight.
PSC had a new category of winner on this day, the ladies
winner, and this was won by Noonit Tawapee. She proudly took home her
prizes, a cuddly toy and a frying pan, presented by Elf Diddy Bernie.
The ‘man with the mike’ was Elf Talkative Alan who
did a fine job of keeping the punters amused and informed, and in addition
made a couple of points: Firstly during the high season the cut off date for
the Monthly Competition will be actioned, no late entries. Secondly he
thanked all the sponsors, Pattaya Sports Club, Blue Parrot, Tequila Reef,
Shenanigans, The Golf Shop, Green Bottle, Papa Ray, and Pattaya Country Club
who donated some free green fees.
There were many technical prizes and fun prizes, listed
below, but as usual the big laugh was for the last in each group; they were
given a prize based on their achievement.

The sharpshooters from Pleasure Dome defeated the Lobby
Bar last week in the Mickey Mouse Darts League to keep their unbeaten streak
alive.
Rising Sun kept pace, just one loss back, by sweeping
match and beer over Bulls Eye.
Mick’s Place also swept match and beer from Devonshire,
Palmer’s performed the feat against Smugglers Rest, and Cheers took the
match and left Bunker thirsty.
Rocky from Devonshire still holds the league lead with a
110 check out.
This week (Nov. 8) sees Cheers v Pleasure Dome, Bulls Eye v Lobby Bar,
Rising Sun v Mick’s Place, Devonshire v Smugglers Rest and Palmer’s v

Fitness Tips: Exercise and Pregnancy
G’Day Readers,
How did you enjoy the mountain bike race, fun wasn’t
it, don’t you think we should have them more often?
Now to continue with the article that I started last week
after the release of the study below, which I’ll show you again before I
finish off the recommendations.
Exercise is beneficial throughout pregnancy
A new study, published in a recent issue of the American
Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, has revealed that exercise, even
during late pregnancy, may prevent complications in pregnant women and their
newborns.
The study looked at 75 pregnant women who exercised
regularly. Each of the women were divided into three groups and worked out
on either a treadmill, stepping machine or participated in a step aerobics
class during their eighth week of pregnancy. The report goes on to state
that any woman exercising regularly before she became pregnant should not
cease the physical activity during the pregnancy and women who were
previously inactive but are looking to ease the effects on her body should
commence exercise but all women should gain a clearance from an Ob. Gyn. to
participate in the exercise.
What you will be told, along with a couple of other
things, is something to the effect of: remember that the baby will not
handle the exercise as well as the mother so follow these guidelines:
Avoid overheating
Avoid prolonged strenuous exercise; limit the hard work
section to 15 minutes or less.
Stay well hydrated; drink plenty of water before, during
and after exercise. Take a water bottle with you to your workout session and
make sure you finish it by the time you finish your session.
Do not use sweating as an indicator of how hot you might
be getting. Your core (internal) temperature may well rise long before
perspiration sets in.
Avoid exercising on hot humid days use fans in hot
weather and strongly consider getting into an air conditioned gym.
Wear light, loose fitting clothing and 100% cotton is
always the best.
Don’t even consider a sauna or steam room session core
temp!
Avoid high intensity exercise, a heart rate of 140 beats
per minute ensures no abnormal responses from the fetus. Any speeds
significantly faster and there have been shown strong signs of distress. If
you don’t have a heart rate monitor, then 140 beats per minute is about
the level where you are a little short of breath but can still hold a
conversation. With this in mind, if you participate in class based
activities then please do not try to keep up with the other ladies that are
not pregnant. Curb that competitive spirit and check your heart rate every
5-10 minutes. Think seriously about getting yourself a “Polar” watch and
heart monitor belt, they are as accurate as an ECG and you don’t need to
stop exercise to do the maths in coming up with an accurate HR number.
If you are a regular exerciser then step down the
intensity of your classes/work load and if you are just starting then think
about aqua aerobics at a sensible speed along with other low to moderate
intensity activities. Yes, the more you put in to your workout the more you
will get out of it but when you are pregnant you shouldn’t put too much in
due to the core temperature and softer joints issues. Non weight bearing
exercise will be the best; e.g. aqua aerobics, swimming and cycling, as they
ensure you get a workout while taking stress off the joints and reduce the
opportunity to fall over. High speed running, jumping and hi/lo aerobics
classes must be avoided for these reasons.
More on this next week, sorry about that but as soon as I
got into the article I realised that it would not be the best thing to give
you half the how to do it and get away with it tips.
Carpe Diem’
From top to bottom and back to the top again
PSC Three Sisters Golf
Monday, the 28th of October, golfers from the Three
Sisters saw the weather finally change. The rains caught up to the golfers
on the last few holes causing a bit of misery. One of the golfers was not
bothered by the rains as he scored much better on the back nine. Chris John,
who won a few weeks ago, held the bottom spot about a week ago, then this
week rose back to the top to take the bragging rights. Chris shot 14 points
on the front nine but came roaring back with the rain on the back nine to
complete his round with 37 points.
This was two points better than Gerry Carpenter who came
in second with 35 points.
Vying for the bottom spot again was Eddie Rudkin who was
trying to hold his card back until he found out who finally got the bag for
the week. Coming in with 25 points for the day, Eddie almost got a hold of
the bag. Slipping past Eddie was Herb Ishinaga. Winner last week and bag
holder this week. Playing with a hangover and walking the 18 holes was too
much for Herb as he came in with a big 22 points.
Some people believe that Big Bob Moberg who gave up after
nine holes should be the bag holder for the week. After due consideration,
Bob was excused under medical grounds. Without a cart, Bob could not manage
the final nine to finish his round.
Tongpen, Koh & Carysforth on the podium at Pattaya Country Club
By Mike Franklin
Forty-nine players teed-off at Pattaya Country Club for
the Diana Group October Seniors & Ladies Open, on a sultry and breezy
day with rain threatening but, thankfully, staying away.
Newcomer, Nattaporn Tongpen, took the honors for the
Ladies Division with 38 Stableford points, closely followed by runner-up Mam
Trayling with 37.
Charles Koh, one of a visiting group from Singapore, was
best in the Seniors Division scoring 39 points with Chris John just one
point behind with 38.
Doug Carysforth, playing in the Super Seniors Division,
returned the best score of the day - a splendid 41 points and good enough to
ease Norman Brooks’ 39 points tally into second place.
Terry Sylvester was first up with a near pin on #5, Paul
Greenslade was nearest on #7, Alan Pearce on #12, and Charles Koh claiming
the #16th.
Long putts were sunk by Kig Persson and Moon Schwulera.
A good gathering ensued back at the Green Bottle for the
prize giving, with the customary snack buffet provided by the Diana Group.
The newcomers were given a special welcome, and thanks duly given to Richard
Livingston and John Cole for sorting out the results and earlier in the day,
a more complicated than usual registration due to changes and late
additions.
The next Diana Group Seniors & Ladies Open will be a
week earlier in November on Thursday 21st due to Papasan Ray Rogers
Thanksgiving tournament at Pattaya Country Club being booked for the 28th.
Sign-up for the Diana Seniors & Ladies November on
November 21st at the Green Bottle, or at the Diana Driving Range, North
Pattaya.
The Diana Gold Charity Golf Tournament, on November 15th
at Plutaluang, is full.
Cream rises to the top at Laem Chabang
IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at the Bunker
On Tuesday, 29th October, the Bunker Boys took on the
immense challenge of the C and A courses at Laem Chabang in their weekly
medal event. On a humid day and a very damp “C” nine the players took
their time in getting to grips with the course, and inevitably here the
lower handicaps inexorably rose to the top of the leader board.
Whilst the division two “wannabes” huffed and puffed
around the first four holes, Steve Nowell was already setting out his stall
to eventually head the top flight with an excellent net 75. Close behind
came PJ Redmond and Harry Riley, both shooting net 77.
It was a different story in division two as Duncan Lee
installed himself at the top of the list with a painstaking net 80, easily
enough to see off the challenge of Saranya Chaiyanont (86) and Neil Griffin
(89).
Len Jones only hit about ten true shots all day but one
of these, his tee-shot on the par three eighth, was almost an ace, landing
within a foot of the pin. He caressed it into the hole to take the Bunker
Super Sawng award for the first time. Two other players, Neil Griffin and
Unto Kilvonen, also achieved the same feat on the same hole but had not
entered the competition and were rewarded with a share of the Bunker Banana
Booby as a consolation.
Laem Chabang seems to carry its reputation before it but,
as Steve Nowell proved, accuracy, not big hitting, is the key to a
successful round at Jack Niklaus’ creation.
Darren dominates at Sattahip
The Royal Thai Navy course at Plutaluang proved once
again to be the ideal host for the Bunker Boys’ weekly Stableford
competition on Friday, 1st November. The fairways were still soaked with the
recent heavy rains but the skies remained clear for the full round over the
testing North and West nines.
The small field was buoyed by the return to his spiritual
golf home of Darren Robson, the first IPGC Champion, and he showed everyone
how much his game has developed in the past year. Now playing off scratch he
fired three bogeys and a birdie in his round of 34 points and declared the
North course as the most difficult he had played for a long while.
His tally was enough to hold a host of players at bay,
including Mr Loy, Hannu Kemilla, Colin Wilkes and David Johnson.
Dale Shier and Mr Loy both shared the Bunker Super Sawng
award whilst the Bunker Banana Booby went to a despondent Danny Greer who
discarded the clubs his mother had given him in favour of a new set of
MacGregor’s. The extra length he was seeking was certainly there but so
was the margin for error and his meagre 20 points merely emphasised that
“mother knows best”!

Joe St Laurent’s net 60 earns free refills for the month
P.S.C. Golf from the Cafe Kronborg
Thursday October 31
Phoenix
(The Monthly
Mug - Stroke)
The last Friday of the month is always reserved for the
prime monthly competition from the Kronborg, and the only one where the
prizes are to be presented back at the Kronborg. The Mug has become the one
competition that most P.S.C. golfers most want to win and usually the winner
has to put in a round of a lifetime to achieve the feat.
Songkran
presents the Kronborg Monthly Mug to Joe St Laurent.
With the competition well underway, as the lightning
flashed all around and the thunder crashed overhead, even the hardy dashed
for cover and the groups in the drink stops got to be quite large with
players and caddies alike crowded in and glad to be under cover. Still the
storm circled and took a long time to pass before normal weather resumed.
The forthcoming electrical storm had been warned to all by dreadfully humid
conditions, and with dripping wet shirts the storm winds caused such a drop
in temperature that all the players were very cold indeed, but on the
passing of the storm and restart the conditions were super, cool and
pleasant.
The weather on these courses can change in an instant and
with such a display of lightning, bravery is hand in hand with stupidity.
But with the competition over and the scores coming in, the big question was
what effect would the weather have on the scores, surely it would knock a
lot of the players concentration and raise the winners score?
Pete
Galle
Two early net 67s by Bob Morrison and Big Pete Galle
looked impregnable in the conditions and as the scores continued to come in
from bedraggled competitors it seemed like it was going to be a count back;
however, in through the door with the last group walked a man in a daze, who
came up to the table, handed in his card and said, “You’re not going to
believe what I just did,” and then stumbled away for a well earned beer.
I didn’t, but a look at his card brought me up short as
the winner of the Monthly Mug had just put a card in my hand with a net 60
on it. Obviously not only the lightning had not been crackling with
electricity that day.
Back at the Kronborg after he was presented the Mug, by
the famous Songkran, Joe St Laurent, the winner of the Mug by a street,
celebrated the round of a lifetime by ringing the bell, and a good time was
had by all.

Seniors & Ladies November Open
The next tournament, exclusively for Seniors (50-64),
Super Seniors (65+) & Ladies (any age) will be held at Pattaya Country
Club on Thursday November 21.
The change in date from the 28th, the last Thursday of the month, to a

Tournament at Pattaya Country Club, originally booked for the 21st, being
moved to the 28th.
“Steady” Ebrahim wins again
Monday October 28
Green Valley Country Club
(Stroke)
The very first grass golf course I set foot on, here in
the Pattaya area, was Green Valley and after learning to play on sand and
playing on it for some years, it was about as close to Paradise as golf
gets, to play this course for the first time.
‘Steady’
Ebrahim won the A flight with net 69.
The course has changed some in the years in between, and
some changes have improved it, like the removal of the infamous Lemon Grass,
others I feel have had the opposite effect, like the new start point for the
round. Whilst we still play the same 18 holes, it’s just not the same.
Still this layout still gets the blood pounding when you
stand on the new first tee and you know that this is to be a special day. I
know many players who still believe that this is the best test of golf in
the area.
Standing on the first tee the day was nice and sunny, and
a pleasant round beckoned, but by the finish of the round the umbrellas had
been hauled out more times than the rest of the rainy season combined, but
at least the rain was warm and the scores did not suffer.
In the A flight ‘Steady’ Ebrahim won with net 69,
beware when ‘EEB’ starts winning he doesn’t stop. Second with a net 69
was Wayne Koch and third was Jim Morton on net 70.
In the B flight ‘Stormin’ Norman Robinson won with a net 67 on count
back over second Duncan Lee net 67 with Bob Benda third on net 69.
Four clubs just enough for Herbie and Dene
by Mike Franklin
Shenanigans set out from the South and East tees at
Plutaluang on Tuesday 29th October for the bi-annual ‘Four Clubs Pairs
Scramble’, on a very hot and humid day and in wet conditions, especially
on the ‘Old Course’ holes. Preferred lies were in order and necessary in
many areas.
Given the chance to be creative with just four sticks in
the bag, Herbie Ishinaga and Dene Mundy proved that taking fourteen clubs
with you is totally unnecessary and proceeded to shoot a net 67.4 and the
take the winning spot.
Close behind was Usa Chaiyusit, paired with friend and
visitor from Switzerland Max Busslinger, returning a net 67.6.
The field of 24 players just merited two place prizes,
which meant that the net 68.8 returned by Jason Payne and Richard Wibrow, in
third place, only warranted consolation.
Usa confirmed her authority on the day by claiming near
pins on S.4 and S.7.
John Hanley was closest on E.2 and Ebrahim, making a
welcome re-appearance, on E.5. The ladies emerged as the specialists with
the long putts, Lamud Chaidara on S.9 and Lamun Hanley on E.9.
Next outing is on November 12th at Plutaluang for a Pairs
Better Ball and the chance for a warm-up round before the ‘Diana Gold’
Charity Golf Tournament on November 15th, both playing the South and East
courses.
Due to moving and conflicting dates on the November
‘Golf in Pattaya’ calendar, the Shenanigans Ladies International Open
scheduled for the 22nd November is cancelled.
Sign-up for November 12th, in pairs please, at
Shenanigans.

3rd: Phil Groves, 7, 30 cb9 15
4th: Doug Campbell, 9, 30 cb9 13
5th: Chris Davisson, 8, 28
On a day more suited to scuba diving than golf, the field
battled the elements. Having started on a very soggy course the conditions
worsened as the round progressed with a thunderstorm causing a one hour
delay which further hindered any chance that anybody would be able to play
near to their handicap.
New member Walter Ottl managed the conditions the best,
being unaware of how difficult it really was, and just strolling round
trying to keep dry. Serge Straeten was the only other high handicapper to
figure in the prizewinners, with all the other places being taken by single
figure players. These were led by the, as usual steady, Phil Groves who just
got the nod on count back from Doug Campbell with Chris Davisson rounding
out the podium.
Brian Kelly knocked in the only two on the day to claim
the pool.
Prior to the prize giving Richard Livingston, the
resident PGA professional, welcomed new members Bill Solenberger from the
USA, Verner Pietsch from Sweden, Dik Lenton from Holland, Achim Mueller and
Walter Ottl both from Germany. He also at the same time welcomed back Claes
Mueller and Don Grisham.
Wednesday 30th October
Burapha East
Stroke Play
1st: Derek Reaper, 14, 65
2nd: Moe Deverdenne, 15, 69
3rd: Stephen Beard, 15, 70 cb9 33.5
4th: Paul Taylor, 20, 70 cb9 34.5
5th: Phil Groves, 7, 71 cb9 33.5
6th: Richard Lyne, 15, 71 cb9 35.5
7th: Dave Lee, 30, 71 cb9 36
Considering the amount of rain that fell in the week, the
Burapha East course played exceptionally well, with very little sign that so
much water had been covering the course, which was a testament to the
drainage system. Derek Reaper, who shot his best round for some considerable
time, decimated the field with a demonstration of long, straight hitting
from the tee and accurate iron shots to the green.
Moe Deverdenne chased him hard throughout the day, but
was unable to maintain the pressure over the last few holes, and had to be
satisfied with second place. The “Doc” made a late run with a very good
back nine but he too found himself well out of the running, but at least did
enough to ensure third place on count back from Paul Taylor.
Phil Groves led a chasing group that also had to be
settled by count back from Richard Lyne and Dave Lee.
A plethora of twos were shared between Dave Stockman,
Richard Lyne, Brian Kelly, Derek Reaper, Moe Deverdenne and Stephen Beard.
Friday 1st November
Siam Country Club
Stroke Play
1st: Serge Straeten, 19, 70
2nd: Chris Davisson, 8, 71
3rd: Derek Reaper, 14, 72
4th: Ciano Glavinia, 15, 73
5th: Russell Finch, 14, 74 cb9 31
6th: Dave Lee, 30, 74 cb9 36
7th: B.J. Smith, 20, 74 cb9 37
Having been playing very well over the last couple of
months, Siam again showed its usual colours after the rains had made it
almost impossible to cut the greens as is the case with most of the local
courses at the moment, which made chipping and putting a thing to quickly
forget.
Serge took the days honours and secured his second win of
the week in the Order of Merit, which leaves him just four points behind the
“Doc” and four in front of B.J. with just three rounds to be played to
the completion.
Chris Davisson lost by one shot having incurred a two
shot penalty for having his caddy shelter him from the elements whilst
putting during a fierce rainstorm on the back nine.
Derek Reaper continued with his run of form taking third
place from the singing cook from Australia, Ciano Glavinia.
Chris Davisson swept the twos pool on his own to somewhat
make up for the narrow loss in the main competition.
Back at The Haven Richard welcomed back Ciano Glavinia to
playing golf having taken the day off from his intensive cookery classes
which he is undertaking in an attempt to lose the “who called the cook a
.... , who called the .... a cook” tag.
Shakey Pete’s extends first place lead
Pattaya Sports Club Friday Bowling League
Shakey Pete’s took all four points from second place
Winchester and extended their lead on everyone except VFW Post 9876. Jon was
best for Shakey Pete’s with a 537 series and Winchester just had a very
bad day.
Best
games of the day were bowled by Suraphan (216) and Pin (205)
House of the Golden Coin moved into a tie for second
after splitting their match with Cafe Kronborg behind Ooy’s 535 pin count
and Nual’s 503 series. Suraphan rolled a day’s best 216 game and 565
series, Kran rolled over 518 pins and Bill chipped in with 503 knocked down,
but Cafe Kronborg could still managed to win only two points.
VFW Post 9876 finally had a good day and they won all
four points from Cafe Ole moving them into fourth place. Pin had a 205 game
and 549 series, Jim knocked down 528 pins and Peter bowled above his
handicap to help the VFW team take all four points.
Three Sisters mounted a balanced attack behind Morn’s
500 series to take three points from Nice & Sleazy. Tue had a 527 series
and Porn a 503 series for Nice & Sleazy but due their lower handicap it
was not enough to win more than one point.
Sky Dive City - a new place to drop in and hang around
Siam Airsports Thailand’s first and only private
skydiving company recently opened their new clubhouse, Sky Dive City on Soi
6. The opening was a dual celebration as Greg Heenan celebrated his birthday
with a crowd of friends.
Partygoers
at Skydive City, Greg Heenan (center back) celebrating his birthday among
friends and Ron Loveridge, managing director of Siam Airsports (back 2nd
left) enjoy the festivities.
The company, which hails from the UK has an impressive
safety record: The UK based club has a zero fatality rate in over 30 years
of operation.
Ron Loveridge, who has long been in the sky diving
business, both in military and as a civilian said, “We are the first
private skydiving company in Thailand. Now that we have the new clubhouse
anyone interested in jumping can come and talk to people who sky dive
regularly. We are setting a precedent with this club. With our safety record
skydivers can have the ultimate and safe experience. We now have more
Thai’s than foreigners jumping.”
Siam Airsports has moved from the previous location in
Au-Udom to Pattaya Airfield, which is on the way to Phoenix Golf Club. The
move was necessary as the previous airfield became constrictive and the
drop-zone was too far from the take-off point. There are also a lot of
factories near Au-Udom.
Siam Airsports will move their office into the clubhouse
for more convenience and better service for customers.
Jumps are available daily, weather permitting. Drop in and check it out
or telephone Ron at 01 295 9972 or email: Rloverridge@ siamairsports.com
Lions Club of Jomtien-Pattaya’s charity golf raises funds for renovating health care unit in Nong Pang Khae District
Mayor Pairat Suttithamrongsawat, along with Paul Davies,
president of the Lions Club of Jomtien-Pattaya, and the club’s members
attended a charity golf fair at the Diana Driving Range to raise money to
renovate the Nong Pang Khae First-Aid Care Unit in Jomtien. The fundraiser
was well attended by many guests and contestants.
(L to
R) Mayor Pairat Suttithamrongsawat, Naris Petcharat, Lions District Governor
of District 310C, and Paul Davies, president of the Lions Club of
Jomtien-Pattaya get the games underway.
The funds for the health care clinic will go toward the
unit’s many needs. The club said the care unit needs at least 800,000 baht
for construction, including 2 ICU rooms, 5 observation rooms, toilet,
bathroom, waste compartment, equipment store, and a reservation area and
300,000 baht for medical equipment.
The upper floor of the clinic will provide HIV patients
with a consulting room, a kitchen, and a visitors’ area. The funds will
also help provide assistance with the out-patient registration room, waste
management tools, 2 wheelchairs, ceiling fan, electric safety box, and a
fire extinguisher.
To entertain the generous participants, the fair welcomed
cheerleaders from Pattaya Business School as they danced their way into the
hearts of the audience, a “Pattaya Elvis” performance was staged, and a
delicious buffet dinner contributed to the fun.
Activities held in the ‘Golf Pha Ploen’ charity fair
included a hole-in-one contest for adults, and a Lion mouth shot contest for
children. Prizes given to winners included health check-up cards, meal
tickets, fishing trip tickets, parachuting, bungee jumping tickets, beauty
salon service tickets, and diving tickets.
Entrance tickets stubs were drawn for the lucky winners
of some fabulous prizes including a motorcycle, air ticket, cruise trip, a
home theatre, mobile phone, a mountain bike, and hotel accommodation
tickets.
Below is a list of prize winners who, if they haven’t been already,
will be contacted by telephone. The results are also published on the Lions
Club website at http://jomtienpattaya.lionwap.org
The Square Ring
by Howie Reed
WBA Super Bantamweight champion Yodsanan Nanthachai
(36-2-1) finally has an opponent for his December 5 th
fight in Bangkok. He gets jr lightweight Lamont Pearson (19-1-1, 11 KOs) who
has been considered a “prospect” in America for some time. A full time
postman, no I will not write “He delivers the Mail”, Pearson has gotten
to the door of a championship, knocked but never entered. His best win was
for a minor American title with a KO in 12 of well known Frankie Warren
(42-14). Well known? He was well known if you knew him. After that win it
was another “W” in an IBF eliminator match that was supposed to lead to
a fight for the title. Never happened. Now Pearson gets a title shot against
Yodsanan Nanthachai who picked up his WBA crown in April with a 12 round
unanimous decision over Lakva Sim (16-2). Neither was a champion when they
fought. The WBA had declared the title empty when they elevated Acelino
Freitas to the status of “Super Champion”. This is a new deal which of
course allowed the WBA to crown another champion and collect another
sanctioning fee. Good move.
December 5, as everyone knows, is a national holiday in
Thailand celebrating the birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej the
Great. Lamont Pearson said, “I understand the country is celebrating their
national holiday on Dec. 5th, but showing no disrespect to the King, the
Punching Postman will always deliver in rain, snow or holidays.” Pretty
clever lingo for a postman. While I don’t have a quote from Yodsanan, if I
did he would probably say, “Your Majesty, most humble Birthday wishes.”
Little e-mail action from reader Carlos Costa. “Hola
Howie Reed, I like your Square Ring, as I really like boxing. That is why
I’d like to ask you what is the venue of the November 14th fight of Somsak
Sithchahchawan (27-1-1) vs. Andries Dick (15-6-3). Howie, you know the
venue? Gracias amigo! sinceramente, Carlos Costa.” I have an answer.
Let’s hope that it’s correct. The fight is listed for Donmuang Bangkok
with no specific venue. BUT how about this for a guess. I think it’s out
near the airport (Donmuang) and I seem to remember a large Shopping Mall in
that area that holds fights. Hope this helps and thanks for the e-mail.
Some out there think that the only good fighters are
those from North, Central and South America. The prevailing wisdom, such as
it is, holds that European fighters lack skill, talent and the training
necessary to compete against the best in the world. The argument can be made
both ways. Regardless there are some darn good fighters plying their trade
in the UK.
Two of them will getting some world wide attention in
December. The timing may not be the best as Holyfield-Byrd and
Klitscho-McCline are also slated for the Santa Month. WBO super middle champ
Joe Calzaghe will make the 12th defense of his title against American
pretender Thomas Tate (41-7), while the Mail’s English correspondent Phil
Jones fav, jr. welter Ricky Hatton will defend his WBU crown against a
member of the TBA family. The bad news is that the December 15 televised
around the world and up your block fight goes head to head with Wladimir
Klitscho - Lameel McCline for the WBO Heavyweight Crown and the Mayweather -
Castillo rematch. Both of those fights will be held in Las Vegas.
Regardless, a great performance by either and they get star billing and will
pump real life into the boxing landscape.
And finally, local favorite Wayne McCullough (26-3)
administered a severe beating to Ruskie Nikolai Eremeey (18-6) last Saturday
night in Belfast. Ermeev’s corner tossed in the towel during the 4 th
stanza. Two things here: Local when applied to Wayne McCullough means
Ireland, England, The Classroom in Pattaya or Las Vegas. Secondly, I used
the word “stanza” instead of round. New rule just came down from the
Boxing Writing Authority. In order to be called a boxing writer you must use
“stanza” at least once in ever story. How about them apples?
PH3 Run 973
The editor asked me to write a wee report about last
week’s run because the appointed scribe Class Bum failed in his duty to
provide a report before the Wednesday 5 p.m. deadline.
I signed up at the Scandi Bar with Dr. Twinky; he
didn’t look like a doctor to me, his sidekick was the Grand Master I’m a
Fini. Last time I came on the run the Grand Master was Joy Beorge or
something like that, he used to make me frightened when he spoke! Whatever
happened to him? The bus journey was very quick out to the a-site which was
near to the Crocodile Farm. I was sat behind a Scandi type chap on the bus
who talked like he wanted to rule the world in the event of something
happening to George W Bush. There were lots of people already waiting at the
a-site, they must be very keen.
After a while I’m a Fini called ‘form a circle’, a
chap called Slammer had to drink from his lady’s new shoes, then the hares
Mobiles Headphone and Shake it said something about paper and paint then off
everybody went.
I walked for a little while but then got tired so I
turned around and went back towards the a-site following that little fat man
Tina Weiner. I like him because he stands up to that bad man AH.
When I got back to the a-site a lot of the runners had
already arrived back, it must have been a short run. Then I heard him! That
American man with the dominant voice Sir Slaphead, he frightens me as well.
I bought a nice red t-shirt from Agent C then I sat down and ate with those
nice Thai ladies, E-mail, Doberman, Slipper and The Bus. The circle was
called and E-mail did the raffle, I never won again.
It wasn’t long before Slaphead was putting people on
ice and giving them funny names, like Telly Tubby, Lice, Moody Chick and
Pork Swinger or something. There were a couple of hashers who had recently
been married to Thai ladies, Vee Vee and Sheep Flyer; good luck guys. They
were joined on the ice by a rather large chap called Free My Willy who has
been married to a Thai lady for nearly 20 years and he would hopefully be
able to give them some advice on making a success of their marriage.
A chap called Bottomless Twit was given hash s@#t for
writing last week’s report in some strange language called German, is that
somewhere near Belgium? That nice man Chickens took over the circle and iced
a few people, I didn’t hear everything because a lot of people were
yakking in funny languages all the time.
The hares sang a song which I couldn’t understand, then
I’m a Fini gave away a hat and a couple of t-shirts to people for
anniversaries. I don’t remember much of what else happened because the
Wine Cooler was working. I know I didn’t go to the happy hour because I
had been told that Mr Slaphead works there.
I enjoyed the day out and maybe I will go hashing again
in the near future as long as the bad man aint there.
Bye Bye K.T.M.
