Pattaya Sports Club Bowling League

200 Bowlers: Tui, Ralph, Nok & Noodle.

Indiana won two points from Canada and they remain in first place but only two points in front of second place Bavaria. Bill Gibson bowled a 505 game as a Pacer which is the best pin count he has had in a long time. Well done Bill!

Antero Ronkainen bowled a 514 series to lead Bavaria into second place with a three point win over Caf้ Kronborg.

Green Tree fell from second to third place after losing three points to VFW Post 9876. Ooy Pluemkamon led VFW with a 532 series and Tui Amphanon bowled a 220 game and 521. Noodle Russell had a 205 game for Green Tree.

Brother D got back on the winning track as they won three points from Tea Party. Ralph bowled a 211 game and 521 series for Brother D. Nok Kennedy, bowling as a Pacer, had a 203 game and 540 series.

Peter’s master class

PSC golf from Lewiinski’s Golf Society

Sunday’s winner
Peter Lenoury.

Sunday, November 6, Green Valley - Stableford

A Flight

1st Peter Lenoury (10) 45pts

2nd Bob Newell (7) 38pts

3rd Steve Mulberry (10) 37pts

B Flight

1st Barry Tregurtha (20) 41pts

2nd Ed Delaney (25) 39pts

3rd Mike Craighead (22) 38pts

Near Pins: No 4 Barry Tregurtha; No 9 Peter Henshaw; No 12 Nick O’Donnell; No 16 Claude Harder

Well you didn’t have to wait long for the title guy’s story to emerge: Peter ‘The Right Honorable’ Lenoury was man of the match with 45 blistering points. It should be noted that such a points total by Peter belies a gross 73 at the society’s home course. He did this remarkable feat picking up two near pins on the way.

Peter’s 45 points overshadowed the fine effort of every body’s favorite ‘Broad more’ Bob. Blackpool’s Steve, always a welcome addition to the society ranks, was a further shot back from Bob for the bronze.

Barry the book Tregurtha, who plies his golf at the always tough Siam Country Club, hence his highest ever recorded handicap, cruised to the junior top spot with a rock solid 41 points. Barry’s effort was two strokes clear of the always in contention Irishman Ed Delaney.

When Mike ‘The Mechanic’ Craighead, Colin ‘the Donkey’ Davis and Peter Wallace walked off the course they were happy, but that changed to sadness when the junior flight was announced, and it got even tougher for the Donkey and Peter as they got to watch the presentation sitting on a bar stool.

Along with Peter’s brace, further 2’s were added by ‘Broad More’ Bob, Claude Harder and Francis Goyons.

Back at Lewiinski’s and after the presentation, Peter kindly rang the bell to celebrate his fine day.

Monday, November 7, Crystal Bay - Stableford

A Flight

1st Brian Dunbar (13) 39pts

2nd Kevin Mcentee (7) 36pts

B Flight

1st Mike Jeffreys (18) 35pts

2nd Colm Mullen (15) 35pts

It didn’t seem possible that it was the 7th of November already but that is what the golf schedule said, and it is about that time of the year that Ireland’s Colm Mullen takes one off his vacations to join the gang, so welcome back Colm.

Anyway, he joined us in time to take on the tough Crystal Bay where Brian Dunbar took the top rung in the flagship flight as he was also the only player to break par. Kevin Mcentee the infamous (Offaly Gang leader) has taken awhile to adjust this trip but he finally managed to put in a podium finish as his even par round was good for the silver.

It was a standoff in the junior flight as Mike the Welsh ‘Wizard’ faced up to Ireland’s Colm’ The silent assassin’ Mullen and Mike cast a spell over Colum who, ever the gracious one, yielded to Mike to accept the silver.

Colm did however claim a ‘2’ as a wee bit of compensation along with Mike Holmes (no relation to John) and the Donkey.

Wednesday,
November 9,
Bangpra - Stableford

A Flight

1st Gary Green (10) 37pts

2nd Peter LeNoury (10) 37pts

3rd J P Grasser (10) 35pts

B Flight

1st Reg McKay (13) 39pts

2nd Brian Dunbar (13) 36pts

3rd Colin Davis (15) 36pts

C Flight

1st Billy Herterich (20) 37pts

2nd Christy Knight (21) 36pts

3rd Joe Tynan (28) 35pts

Scotland’s very own Buckie boot boy Reg McKay was not the biggest guy in the field by any stretch of the imagination this Wednesday at Bangpra, but he was certainly the best. His 39 points was three clear of the tandem of Brian Dunbar and Colin ‘the Donkey’ in B Flight as Brian’s more favorable inward nine relegated the Donkey to the bronze.

Moving up to the senior flight saw Sunday’s hero in a count back with Gary Green for the senior flight gold, with the scales tipping in Gary’s favour. A triumvirate of players was in contention to fill the last flight spot; J P Grasser, Thierry Petrement and J P Maffrey but it was the latter who came out of the count back on top to fill the flight.

The junior flight was all wrapped up by Billy Herterich with a solid 37 points. Billy was closely followed in by two of Ireland’s favorite boys in Christy ‘Good’ Knight and Joe ‘Sat nav’ Tynan, stringed out behind Billy in one shot digit increments.

Trevor Loftus and Co. Dublin’s new lord mayor Colm Mullen split a very healthy 2’s pot.

Note: Lewiinski’s is situated on Pattaya Land Soi 1, Beach Road Soi 13/3 near to Walking Street. Anyone wishing to play with us just pop in and add your name to the list or call Colin on 089 826 0764. Transport is provided.

Laong fires blistering back nine at Pattaya Country Club

PSC golf from The Outback Golf Bar

A happy Suzi Lawton after her fantastic 41 points at Khao Kheow.

Monday,November 7,
Khao Kheow - Stableford

There wasn’t a report filed by anyone about the course today but what seemed over the weekend as though it was going to be a very low turnout changed into a full house, although only 21 played on the tournament as the Irish guys, who were due to joins us, arrived late and played in their own competition.

So it was A & B from the yellows and it does look as though the Outbackers are gradually learning how to play this course as Suzi topped the day, after a lean spell of some weeks, with an excellent 41 points, to take Div A by six from the consistent Graham Johnson on 35.

Andy Makara also turned on a bit of form to win Div B with 38 points, losing one shot to handicap in the process and he was two clear of two guys on 36, Chris Thompson and Steve Plant.

In the race to the end of the month in the Big Mango Properties sponsored best 6 cards tournament, Dennis Pelly (99pts) opened up a clear lead of 13 points over Owen Walkley (86pts), they being the only two players to have entered all three counting tournaments so far; with Greg Hill back in third on 69.

Finally, there was an incident involving the marking of a scorecard. All players are reminded that it is the players responsibility see ensure that his or her card has been marked correctly at the end of the round before it is handed in to the tournament organisers. Don’t give your marker a hard time if the score is wrong in your opinion but you failed to sign or check your card just because you’re in a hurry to leave the course!

There was only one ‘2’ from Dennis Pelly on hole 17.

Some of the visiting 17 Irish lads relax at the Outback Golf Bar.

Div A (0-15)

1st Suzi Lawton (15/Hi16.8) 41pts

2nd Graham Johnson (8/Hi7.3) 35pts

3rd Paul Pedelty (16/Hi14.5) 34pts

4th Dennis Pelly (12/Hi10.8) 34pts

Div B (16+)

1st Andy Makara (30/Hi27.5) 38pts

2nd Chris Thompson (26/Hi23.6) 36pts

3rd Steve Plant (18/Hi13.3) 36pts

4th Paul Rogers (22/Hi20.5) 32pts

Tuesday,
November 8,
Pattaya C.C. - Stableford

It was another good turnout here at Pattaya Country Club with 26 Outbackers playing in two divisions.

The course was in good condition and as usual our organiser for the day, Chad, got us all away in fine fashion, even though he didn’t quite believe it himself when it was down to the last two groups and he had 8 players left! If you’d seen him the day before trying to get the groups sorted, with Capt’ Bob having about three Kens playing and Irish Sean, and then a couple more no shows in the morning, it really was quite remarkable that it all worked out OK. Well done mate!

It was nice to see Frank O’Neill in the bar on Tuesday morning, there to support his good lady, Laong who looks after him so well. He must have inspired her that morning as she returned one of her best scores ever (42pts), which contained one the most remarkable back nines seen on any scorecard. Going out in a modest 16 points, Laong opened up the back nine with three 4 pointers in a row, birdieing the 10th and the 12th and not content with that she collected another 4 points on hole 15, to romp home with a total on the back nine of 26!

Poor John White must have wondered what hit him, as he scored a great 41 points, in stark contrast to last week’s effort, but it was only enough to earn him second place, however it did move him up the DeVere Monthly Eclectic leader-board. Chad also scored well today to take third with 37.

General Jack (35pts), followed last week’s win with another one this week, staying under the handicap radar both times as he beat Billy Fitzgerald who was going great guns on the front nine (22pts) only to struggle on the back with only 13. Perhaps the departure of John Cogan, who had to go home to take care of one of his kids after 8 holes having already scored 18 points at that point, disrupted Billy’s obvious comfort zone.

There were only two ‘2’s from Geoff Williams on hole 7 and Laong on hole 12.

Div A (0-17)

1st Jack Moseley (14/Hi14.9) 35pts

2nd Billy Fitzgerald (12/Hi13) 35pts

3rd Dennis Persson (14/Hi15.7) 32pts

4th Geoff Doody (17/Hi17.9) 31pts

Div B (18+)

1st Laong Gatepratum (27/Hi25.6) 42pts

2nd John White (27/Hi27.2) 41pts

3rd Barry Chadbourn (18/Hi19) 37pts

4th Nigel Cannon (21/Hi21.6) 33pts

Wednesday,
November 9,
Burapha - Stableford

With 48 players it takes a little bit of time to get everyone away, but we got there in the end. It was a great day for golf just a nice breeze and not too hot and there was a new “Boo Hoo” cup challenge today between John and Suzi Lawton against Bob Philp and Neil Lavery, which was won on the 18th by a shot from Suzi:- 100 yards to go and she hits it to 6 inches.

The Capt was playing under a handicap today with his first two shots off the 1st tee going out of bounds - a great start to the day.

John Lawton managed to get Neil a bit under the weather and by the time we turned it was anybody’s “Boo Hoo” cup, but the beer took over from about hole number 13 and that was the end of us.

As for the rest of the scores, they were not too bad but nobody got the better of the course as the best score in was 38 points from one of the Irish lads visiting us for the second year; hope you enjoyed your day fellas.

John Cunningham topped Div A with 35 points, just pipping one of the Irish boys, James O’Mahony, on count back with Jim Brackett and Owen Walkley following them in just one shot back, both with 34.

Gerry Mernagh (Irish) won Div B with 38 ahead of Les Easton (37) with Pete Stonebridge a distant third on 31.

Our regular players dominated Div C with the win going to Greg Hill (36) and Bob Lindborg (33) and Barry McIntosh also with 33, taking the minor places. We also had a D division today and that was won by another of the Irish, Mr J Braithwaite, with 37.

The course continues to be in magnificent condition with the greens fast and true and with run now on the fairways.

Note: The “Boo Hoo” is a little fun matchplay challenge started last year and this year it will run until just after Christmas and will serve as a charity fundraiser. So if you fancy throwing down the gauntlet for a match against your mates you’re welcome to have a go, with the losers contributing to the fund of course.

There were only three ‘2’s from Owen Walkely on hole C5, Dennis Pelly (hole C8) and Tom Fitzpatrick (hole D8).

Div A (0-11)

1st John Cunningham (7/Hi6.8) 35pts

4th Pat Connolly (23/Hi22) 33pts

Friday, November 11, Green Valley - Stableford

Our Irish friends from Wednesday, never made it, which was probably just as well as we would have been overbooked by a few on an already busy course, leaving us with a good sized field of 30, plus a couple or so.

Suzi ran the comp as Capt’ Bob had jobs to do and the General was up country enjoying the delights of Loy Kratong (Thurs 10th Nov) in Surin for a change instead of at the packed beaches in Pattaya & Jomtien.

Jan Eriksen led the way in Div A, with the day’s top score of 38, from Steve Plant and Murray Hart both on 37. Div B went to a surprise winner, John Lawton (35pts) who’s back to work in Nigeria this weekend, with Andy Makara and Paul Rogers filling the second and third spots with 34 apiece.

There were two ‘2’s on hole 12, one from Dennis Pelly and the other from Chris Thompson.

Div A (0-16)

1st Jan Eriksen (14/Hi14.1) 38pts

2nd Steve Plant (13/Hi13.3) 37pts

3rd Murray Hart (13/Hi13.2) 37pts

4th Dennis Pelly (10/Hi10.9) 36pts

Div B (17+)

4th Roger Pickering (26/Hi25.1) 32pts

The Ashes – a distant memory

IPGC golf from The Haven

Frank Dunstan with The Ashes.

Sunday, November 6, Green Valley - Stableford

CSS 71

1st Mark Armstrong (22) 40pts

2nd Peter Skinner (9) 40pts

3rd Joe Peters (18) 40pts

4th Peter Masters (8) 38pts

5th Charlie Sheppard (17) 37pts

The course at Green Valley is almost back to its former state with the fairways offering a good roll and the greens receptive, which all adds up to a good opportunity for the participants of the competition to score well and get the handicap down.

Three certainly did that with Mark Armstrong holding on well over the back nine to win the three-way count back with a better 24, which left Peter Skinner in second place after he returned 22 on the nine and 15 on the last six leaving Joe Peters in third as he could only put together 14 over the back six.

Mark Armstrong.

Peter Masters slipped in another Sunday net under par round to signal a possible future drop in his handicap and Charlie Sheppard returned his best score for a little while, also under handicap, but with such good results having been returned above him, he had to settle for fifth spot.

The 2’s were shared between Peter Masters, Joe Peters and Gary Olliffe.

Monday, November 7, Pattaya C.C. - Stableford

CSS 72

1st Peter Skinner (9) 37pts

2nd Joe Niisato (16) 37pts

3rd Alan Pilkington (9) 37pts

4th Mike Spear (22) 35pts

5th Rod Howett (24) 35pts

Pattaya Country Club has changed quite a bit over the last few weeks to become one of the favourite courses on the schedule as the fairways and greens continue to provide an excellent basis for golfing enjoyment, and even though the surrounding areas are sometimes a bit on the untidy side, a good day out can always be relied on by the players.

Peter Skinner.

Peter Skinner lost no time in making up for missing out on the previous outing with yet another under handicap round, but this time recording a better back nine than the other two in the count back and succeeding with 21 to take the top step of the podium, as Joe Niisato settled for second with 18 points and Alan Pilkington third place with 16.

Mike Spear made a big splash with his best return for some considerable time, in fact in over a year, to take fourth spot and was left ruing a very slow start that saw him open the first half with just 13 but finished strongly with 22 on the back as Rod Howett, after a good start, struggled to keep up the momentum with just 16 over the inward half.

Peter Skinner had the lone 2 in the first division while Paul Simpson had the same to claim the second division pool.

Before presenting the prizes The Doc welcomed back Peter Skinner and Paul Simpson.

Wednesday,
November 9,
Khao Kheow - Stableford

CSS72

1st Frank Hughes (17) 36pts

2nd Dick Heaney (17) 34pts

3rd Brendan O’Driscoll (13) 34pts

4th Lyle Blaw (12) 34pts

5th Shuichi Kodaka (16) 33pts

The course has had some poor reports of late but although not quite as good as had been recently reported, it was still a great improvement of the rather soggy presentation of other recent visits as the scores from the yellow tees indicated, with the CSS remaining at 72 for the first time in a while.

Frank Hughes took care of business with a solid level handicap round to take a two shot win ahead of a group of three fighting it out over second place. These were led by Dick Heaney whose 19 on the back nine was sufficient to ensure his place in front of Brendan O’Driscoll, who finally took third after a mammoth count back over Lyle Blaw that saw him win on the last two with a better 4 to 3 after they had halved the nine on 17 the six on 12 and the three on 5.

Shuichi Kodaka slipped into fifth with a steady if unspectacular three over return.

In keeping with the difficulty of the course there were no 2’s in either division.

Back at The Haven there was a welcome for new member Brendan O’Driscoll and a welcome back for Al Rolnik.

Friday, November 11, The Emerald - Stableford

CSS 71

1st Graham Johnson (7) 38pts

2nd Bubbles Davies (17) 37pts

3rd Brendan O’Driscoll (13) 35pts

4th Russell Exley (7) 35pts

5th Rod Howett (24) 35pts

A good turnout for the always popular Emerald at Ban Chang enjoyed a course that, whilst not at its best, was very playable which was borne out by the CSS for the day reducing to 71 as many of the day’s hopefuls returned cards that were around their handicap level or better.

Graham Johnson finished the day on top with a very creditable two under that just edged out the visiting Bubbles Davies who had hoped that his best round since 2008 would get him to the top of the pecking order. Sadly it was not to be, as he missed out by a single point, so he contented himself with being best drinker in the bar after the results were declared.

Brendan O’Driscoll made it two podium places on the trot with yet another third place, winning the three-way count back this time with a better 19 to 17 ahead of Russell Exley, who was in turn better than Rod Howett who could only muster 15 after a very bright start.

Once again there were no 2’s in the first division but Don Everett made a happy return day with the only one in the second division which swept the rollover pot.

Prior to the presentation of the prizes there were welcome backs for Dave Howden, Don Everett, Wayne Waywood, Bubbles Davies and Frijof Kayser. As usual there was what is now a ritual showing of the replica Ashes Trophy to the returning members from Oz together with the offer to join with Frank Dunstan in having their picture taken holding the treasured item which, and in the light of the recent result against SA, it might be a long time before the opportunity might occur again with the real thing.

Note: The Haven group now departs Soi 13 at the earlier time of 9 am until further notice. If you would like to play with the group you can contact mobile 082 219 0965 or call in to the hotel at 185 Soi 13 between Beach Road and 2nd Road. All transportation to the course is arranged and you do not need to sign up prior to the day, but you should be there by 8.30 on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and 9.00am on Sundays on the days you wish to play. A schedule of courses to be played can be found on our web site at www.thehaven-hotel.com.

PSC golf from the Three Sisters Bar

Wednesday, November 9 could not have been a better day to play golf at Pattaya Country Club: the sun hid itself enough to make it not too hot and there was a wonderful light breeze.

A party of five teed off but they were overtaken by a fast foursome led by Herbie Ishinaga. Another quintet took off immediately after for a total of 14 players out today.

Drifting back the Caddy Shack II the cards were tallied and no stranger to the top spot Dale Murphy headed the listings with 36 points. Kevin Worl and Bill Thompson tied at 33 but Kevin took second on the count back. Sliding in behind the leaders were Ciano (31), Paul K. & Larry M. (30) and the balance we won’t talk about.

Herbie again provided snacks along with the long dogs and pressed ham as sandwich material.

Monday,
November 7,
Green Valley – Stableford

This was our first visit here for some considerable time for various reasons and we returned with eleven groups out today.

We teed off over the water on the first and after all the rain we have had recently we were amazed how much run the ball was getting on a slightly uphill fairway.

There were three men’s divisions today with the cut at 4-12, 13-19 and 20 plus and 39 points was the best score in winning division 2 for Neville Scurrell. Andy Baber took second with 37 and Dennis Scougal was third after beating Mike Lewis and Bryan Rought on an 18/15/13 back-nine count back.

The Swedish boy Mikael Andersson topped division 1 with 38 points, beating the Finish boy Kari Kuparinen by one shot and the Estonian lad Raivo Velsberg was third on 33 after beating Sassa on a 17/16 count back.

Ian Hart won division 3 with 35 points, beating Terry Redding on a 7/6 back three count back and in third place was Burnie Sinclair with 34.

Near pins went to Martin McAteer, Sassa, Raivo Velsberg, Chris Voller, Jim Connolly, Mike Lewis and Bo Singleton.

In the ‘2’s there was one rollover in division 1 and Sassa was the only winner with a birdie on the 16th. Andy Baber birdied the 12th to claim the rollover pot in division 2.

Wednesday,
November 9,
The Emerald – Stableford

After Monday’s game we expected similar conditions here but in places it was still a little spongy but with carts allowed on the fairway there was no ‘lift clean and place’ today.

There were 36 out today so three divisions with the cut at 4-12, 13-20 and 21+.

Tony Thorne returned with 42 points to win division 1, beating Chris Voller who finished with 39 for second and in third place was Marty Rock on 37.

Count back Burnie’s 39 points proved to be unbeatable in division 2 as he finished ahead of Martin McAteer by one point and Mike Missler came in third after beating Mike Lewis on a 14/12 back six count back, both on 35 points.

Bryan Priestley’s 38 points won division 3 with Paul Chabot in second place with 36 and Leo in third place on 33.

Near pins went to Reijo (2), Sami, Tony Thorne, Bernd Floethner, Yom Novak and Ponti while ‘2’ were recorded by Peter Pedder, Raivo Velsberg, Sami, Tony Thorne, Chris Voller and William Chang.

It was the Oz boy Terry Redding’s 65th birthday today so we met at the En Zed bar near the market here in Jomtien where all the drinks were provided by the birthday boy, and a few nibbles were hosted by the bar as well. Many thanks to Terry from all of us at Jomtien Golf!

Friday, November 11, Eastern Star - Stableford

One week on and the course had improved considerably; the eighth hole, which had been a quagmire for many weeks, had completely dried out and surprised many people and while there were still a few sodden areas around the course the majority of players were all pleased.

It was pleasant conditions all round today and we had 6 ladies and 38 men out in three divisions with the cut at 4-14, 15-18 and 19 plus.

Playing off an 11 handicap Marty Rock had a two over par gross score on the front nine and a gross 38 on the back nine to come in and win division 1 with a remarkable 44 points. Bill Bertram was second on 35 and Mikael Andersson took third one point behind Bill. A great round Marty and well done!

The Irish boy Cully Monks was back in the headlines again after winning division 2 with 38 points, Mike Missler was three points behind and Jim Connolly claimed third with 34 after beating Andy Baber on a 21/17 back nine count back.

Another 38 points won Bryan Priestley podium position in division 3with Jim Lane second on 35 and Brian Blackford beat John Helm for third on an 18/16 back nine count back after they both scored 33 points.

Miss Nut captured the ladies division with 35 points, beating Anothai Van Zeeland on a 21/16 back nine count back. A good return for Miss Nut!

Near pins went to Josie Monks, Nut Ponvipa, Anothai Van Zeeland, Arthur Hancock, Olli, Sassa, Timo, Eric Reginiussen (2) and Reijo.

In the ‘2’s there were two rollovers in the Eastern Star pot and Sassa had a birdie on the 17th, his second this week, to share the purse with Don Head who birdies the 6th hole. Reijo got a ‘2’ on the 3rd for the only win in division 2.

Our 5th annual Club Championship gets under way next week with two 18 hole rounds at Eastern Star on Wednesday and Friday, an individual four divisional game each day and an overall competition over the two days.

‘Mighty Joe’ mauls the field

PSC golf from The Golf Club

This week’s winners, your correspondent Bob Newell (left) and Joe Mooneyham.

Bob Newell

Monday, Nov. 7, Green Valley - Stableford

1st Joe Mooneyham (16) 47pts

2nd Rick Harris (8) 40pts

3rd Martin Zimmerman (16) 38pts

Joe ‘bionic’ Mooneyham - what’s a little heart surgery, replacement knees or all and sundry bits of minor surgery got to do with it anyway? When you can knock that ball around like our ‘6 million baht man’ did on Monday at Green Valley then the answer is ‘not a whole lot’.

Forty seven points is, I think, the highest individual score I have ever had to report, thank the Lord it was the PSC golf chairman himself who scored it. Imagine the dilemma I’d have been in if a first time visitor, say, had come in with it, there would have been uproar!

It just goes to show that maybe sometimes we could have been a bit tough on people who have done just that and there is a game like that inside all of us, even if it is buried quite a bit deeper for some.

Spare a thought for the mere mortals then on Joe’s day. There were a multitude of scores in the mid 30’s, with the solid and consistent striking of Jimmy Brackett pulling 36 points and, after his brilliant performance of the previous day, Peter LeNoury notched 37. However, these scores weren’t good enough for the money places.

Martin ‘I think I can get to 12’ Zimmerman grabbed third with another fine effort and 38 (keep it up mate and I think you’ll get there too). A rare visit from Rick Harris proved fruitful for him, with a very fine 40 pointer off his 8 handicap. But head and shoulders, along with hips, knees and feet, above the rest, stood ‘Mighty Joe’ Mooneyham. Well done Joe!

Just a quick note on the course: I’m happy to report that Green Valley seems to be on the mend. Although the greens have some way to go the overall condition seems to improve week by week. Let’s hope it continues.

Wednesday,
November 9,
Crystal Bay - Stableford

1st Bob Newell (7) 39pts

2nd John Pierrel (12) 37pts

As reported the last time we played here, I’m staggered that people still don’t seem to have woken up to the fact that Crystal Bay is back to its best and an absolute gem to play. It is without doubt one of the prettiest courses around, it’s not a difficult course to walk, it doesn’t beat you up and, today, at 700 baht green fee, what’s not to like about it?

Maybe I should just keep quiet and keep enjoying the millionaire’s golf out there! One other factor that drew broad smiles from players today was ‘run-on-the-ball’ After what seems like months of seeing a good looking shot just splat into the ground (or even come backwards at times) it was a real joy to see that thing bounce and run.

With our small, but none the less, happy bunch, playing in lovely conditions, with a nice cooling breeze it was a little surprising not to see better scores. An improvement on the last time it has to be said but we’re still a long way from being ‘straight A’ students, Tommy.

John Pierrel’s form has dipped of late but he came roaring back to get the second of only two places today and he looked a much more relieved player handing in his 37 point scorecard. Unfortunately for him, the guy he handed it to, er….me, had just carded a 39 to complete a very good run of form over the last 2 weeks.

Friday sees us playing and supporting the very worthy Royal British Legion Poppy Day game at Khao Kheow so it’s another abbreviated write-up for this week. Unless of course some of the Golf Club boys do well, then I may just have to scribble something down quickly. As they say in all the best papers - ‘watch this space’.

Battle of the sexes at Mountain Shadow

PSC golf from The Fairways Golf Society

The ladies & gents teams line up at Mountain Shadow.

Monday,
November 7,
The Emerald – Stableford

Just when we thought the rainy season had finally ended we got caught out half way round the course when the heavens opened up yet again. Although it did not last very long, some of us got thoroughly soaked through. It did not seem to affect most of the players however as the golf was of a very high standard with several scores under par.

Bryan Neal once again took the honours with 40 points and it was nice to see John Coetzee come in second with a good score 38 as he has been struggling as of late.

Near pins went to Scott Dobbins, John Coetzee, Ning Neal and Pier Cere.

1st Bryan Neal (19) 40pts

2nd John Coetzee (19) 38pts

3rd Scott Dobbins (0) 37pts

4th Andy Crabb (22) 37pts

Playing captains Noi Emerson & Tony Duthie.

Wednesday,
November 9,
Greenwood – Stableford

We had a full house today so three divisions - and thankfully not a drop of rain in sight!

Surely the handicapper will catch up soon with Bryan Neal as once again he excelled in the B flight with 40 points. But today this was not good enough to win as he was eclipsed by Eric Reginilsson with 41.

We had near pins today for the Ladies and Gents and the respective winners were Koong, Ning, Yui & Yusa (Ladies) and Bryan Neal, Bob Moore & Barry Wellings (Men).

A Flight

1st Richard Hurley (6) 35pts

2nd Pier Cere (12) 34pts

3rd Shane Ruddle (2) 34pts

B Flight

1st Eric Reginilsson (20) 41pts

2nd Bryan Neal (19) 40pts

3rd Bob Moore (17) 36pts

Ladies

1st Yui Bietry (9) 38pts

2nd May Mitchel (20) 34pts

3rd Nut (26) 34pts

4th Yusa (26) 34pts

Friday, November 11, Mountain Shadow - Stableford

We had not played this course for quite some time so it was decided to give it another go and everyone seemed happy with the decision.

That man Bryan Neal took the honours once again with 39 points; there seems to be no stopping him at the moment. Second place turned out to be a real battle with John Coetzee, just edging out Pier Cere on a back nine count 21-16 after they both came in with 37 points.

Pier also had two near pins while Alan Pilkington had one and nobody managed to get on the green on the other par three. Only one division today with sixteen players so four places.

1st Bryan Neal (19) 39pts

2nd John Coetzee (19) 37pts

3rd Pier Cere (12) 37pts

4th Alan Pilkington (8) 33pts

Also this week we had a match-play tournament between the Fairway gentlemen and ladies. This turned out to be a huge success with everybody thoroughly enjoying the fierce competition. It was a real battle with both teams determined not to lose.

When the men lost the first three matches recorded it did not look good for them, but somehow they battled back to win by the narrowest of margins 5 to 4 and it was really exciting as three of the matches went to the last hole.

The individual match results were as follows: Tony Duthie.(cpt) lost 1 down to Noi Emerson.(cpt); Shane Ruddle lost 3 & 2 to Yui Bietry; Don Head lost 2 & 1 to Mam; Pier Cere won 4 & 2 over Ning Neal; Frank Riley lost 1 down to Koong; Bryan Neal won 5 & 4 over Yusa; Eric Reginilsson won 3 & 2 over Nut; Bob Moore won 4 & 3 Sang; John Coetzee won 1 up over May Mitchell.

An excellent time was had by one and all back at the Fairways club house and everyone was talking about when we will have the return match and what the outcome will be next time.

Note: The Fairways Driving Range and Golf Society is situated at the top of Pattaya Klang on Sukhumvit Road and plays every Sun/Mon/Wed & Friday. Anyone wishing to play with us can call into the club house and put their names down on the lists provided or call Scott on 084 389 2379. Transport provided if required.

Parish puts on a show at Pleasant Valley

Derek Brook

Tuesday, November 8, Pleasant Valley – Stableford

Just another day in paradise when fortunately for we here in Pattaya there was no rain and the sun beat down. On this day we had a very good turnout and it seems that the ‘High Season’ regulars are starting to trickle in.

We were soon on the road to Pleasant Valley and it was noticed that the roads were rather fuller than normal, and we were aware that the return journey would be very slow when we drove back to Pattaya. However we soon arrived and were quickly booked in and ready to go onto the first tee. That was when we were told we were off the tenth instead, so around the corner we went to tee-off into a strong wind. I seem to remember that this time of the year tends to be windy, and one thing you can be sure of on this golf course is that the wind is always into your face, or so it seems.

Starting on the back nine we were soon underway and found the rough really difficult and with the wind blowing we were in it quite often. The fairways were if anything quite dry, and with the rain of late, quite surprising. The greens however were in good condition and the ball ran smoothly. One of the things that was fed back to me at the end was that some of the golfers contributed with the water levels in the ponds by depositing their ball there. Indeed a couple of mine ended up in a watery grave.

Round over we were soon into the excellent changing facilities and the showers here are first rate. Then we had a quick bite in the fine restaurant where the prices are well within the area of reasonable before it was into the cars for the journey back. This proved pretty much as expected, packed roads and as we reached Pattaya traffic was blocked back. Still, eventually we reached Bert’s.

It was not long before the golfers were tucking into Bert’s golfer’s special and partaking of ‘Happy Hour’ and then to find out the winners.

In the A Flight, 0 to 19, the winner was Brian Parrish with 41 points ahead of Frank Pilkington in second with 36 points and Tony Berry in third with 35 points. In the B Flight, the winner was Barry Oats with 39 points ahead of Jim Ferris in second with 36 points and Henry Wong in third with 34 points. It was then time to help Bert out in Happy Hour. T.T.F.N.

Near Pins: Mike Gaussa, Laurie Garrett (2), Daryl Evans

Long Putts: Alan Sullivan, Barry Oats

Tony C shows the way

PSC Golf from Mulligans Lakeside

Dave, Les Easton, Tony Chetland & Wendy Chetland.

Tuesday, November 8,
Rayong C.C. - Stableford

Tuesday was a visit to Rayong Country Club to take advantage of the lower prices, now that “High Season” is here, not necessarily golfers, but it is November.

Two flights again today with the cut at 19+, although it was the higher flight players who shone the brightest. In first spot was Mam (29) with a sparkling 40 points, ahead of Dom (19) with 39, while Tony Chetland (19) got the bronze spot with 32.

In the lower flight a count back to the last 6 holes was needed before Jim Federspiel (18) edged Jeff Wylie (5) 14/11 after both signed for 32 points, with Liam (14) picking up third with 30 on count back over Geoff & Mike.

Near Pins were won by Mam, Gordon, Kat & Tony C.

Thursday, November 10,
Greenwood - Stableford

Greenwood was to be our venue for Thursday and A & B was our allotted combination. The course was in good condition, with greens running nicely while still holding the well hit shot.

Tony Chetland (19) led the way with 36 points, ahead of Les Easton (14) 34, with Jeff (5) getting third with 33 on count back over Wendy Chetland (31) 14/13.

Wendy made some amends by getting a near pin with Dave & Les, while Banglamung Boys Home was the beneficiary of one being un-won.

Note: Mulligans Lakeside plays golf on Tuesday & Thursday. Call 089 094 1841 for scheduling or enquiries. Hope to see you there, cheers & good golfing!

Bruce & Browne take the honours

Phoenix Tuesday/Friday Golf Group

Tuesday’s winners pose with the staff at The Relax Bar.

Mike Gerrard

Tuesday,
November 8,
Phoenix - Stableford

Well into the high season now and with the threat of storms gone we experienced a full house today on the Mountain and Lake course, which is now getting back to its best after a very poor run of about 4 months of inferior conditions. At last we could say with confidence “no winter rules in place today.” Strange really when you think about it, it is now winter - best time of the year here.

Today, with so many players, we divided the field into two flights with the split coming at 17 handicap.

In A flight our winner was Albert Bruce with 39 points, with yours truly (Mike Gerrard) in second place with 38 points and John Stafford in third with 34.

The B flight was won by Patrick Browne with 36 points, with Bob Neylon claiming second with 34 to push Derek Bannerman into third (on count back) also with 34.

The winner of the KPK Food Services voucher went to Patrick Browne (shown in the photo with his impish grin) with the KPK hat going to Albert Bruce as a consolation because he has not played enough times to qualify for the voucher. (Sadly I am not allowed to claim it either).

We did place out 4 near pin markers, and unfortunately they were not returned by the last group, so we put the prizes into the lucky draw. This meant 7 lucky draw prizes much to the delight of the players who had not already won something. (Another little rule in our group - any major winners or near pin winners do not get entered into the lucky draw).

Our hosts The Relax Bar (owner Ung and staff with their menu advert in photo) always donate two of the lucky draw prizes each week and along with the other 5 it did not leave many players without some sort of reward. Indeed everyone that returns to the presentation gets the first drink free out of the days takings, costed at a preferential rate by the bar owners.

Next week we have our new sponsor, Nemo’s Music Lounge donating the 500 baht voucher for the best score and we will play a straight stableford.

We start at 12.00 noon every Tuesday and Friday and anyone wishing to join us, please contact me on 087 091 7565 to find out if there is space available. It is preferred by the group that anyone wishing to play should be reasonably proficient and hold a current official handicap.

Our fishing section is also very busy now with the next two trips full. The next available dates are the 10th and 24th of December, and thereafter the second and fourth Saturday of the month.

Boss’s day just got better

IPGC Pattaya Golf Society at Rabbi’s Elephant Bar

Monday, 7th November dawned bright as the members of the Pattaya Golf Society gathered at Rabbi’s in Soi Buakhao to make the short journey to Khao Kheow to play a stableford competition over the B and C nines. The course showed signs of improvement on the previous month but it is still a long way off being in its best condition. Fairways are still soft and slow and greens may be picking up a bit now.

In the first ranking competition for the Society’s “Player of the Month” title there was a three-way tie for second place as Wichai Tananusorn, Tony Thorne and Jesper Hansen all managed to collect 34 points but they were outdone by organiser Mr Len, with 35. The day had begun badly for him with three drop-outs before departure, including one driver, but he still managed to keep enough composure to make a fist of things.

Tony Thorne recorded the day’s only birdie ‘2’ and the Booby Bevy went to Jim Ferris who performed poorly after coming down five shots in two weeks. A reality check for Jim, indeed, on the testing track at Khao Kheow.

A good day at Greenwood

An empty car park, an empty course, two tees and the great company of friends, that was Greenwood on Wednesday, 9th November as the club welcomed the Pattaya Golf Society when the Soi Buakhao based group called to play a stableford event over the A and B nines.

The joy of the day was enhanced by a jaw-dropping discount for the two flights cut at eighteen and under. For some the golf was even better!

In the top flight Joe Niisato, now safely relocated from soggy Bangkok, celebrated with 37 points for third place whilst Ken Grimes and David Milne shared the win with 39 points each. For Ken it was his first sub-par round with the PGS and for David it was his first taste of competition golf and the handicapper will be at work immediately!

In the second flight Jean Morel hardly saw life off the fairways as he totalled 34 points for third, just one behind Chris Walsh who again impressed on the front nine. The winner with the best score of the day was Aussie Gary Bolger and his forty points represented his best effort with the PGS.

There were no birdie ‘2’s and the Booby Bevy went to Brian Shaw for his 19-12 split. Pity poor Pat Murphy who had the same split but is here for longer that Brian and will surely pick up the free beer before stocks finally run out!

Back in Soi Buakhao it was Rabbi’s birthday and the party celebration went on long into the night, especially for those who had enjoyed a great day out at Greenwood.

Former soldier marches to glory

The Pattaya Golf Society decided to go “cheap and cheerful” with a stableford competition at Century Chonburi on Friday, 11th November. The course was in reasonable condition with good fairways and medium quick greens and a local competition rule applied to the bunkers, therefore the day was to represent absolute “vfm”.

Good scores abounded and sharing second place were Haruyuki Kato, with the best gross of the day, 79, and Jesper Hansen, a revelation on this trip. Both returned 37 points, just edging out Bryan Barrell with his best ever PGS performance of 36.

Fittingly, Remembrance Day was the occasion when former serviceman Dave Wilkinson produced his best ever display with PGS, a staggering 43 points which saw him reach thirty-six after just thirteen holes. He now becomes the fifth PGS member to reach that score this year and it was a proud moment for the Englishman and his wife Margaret, also in the field.

Birdie ‘2’s were recorded by Haru Kato (two), Pete Seward and Jesper Hansen and the Booby Bevy went to Garry Hookey who took up the role of caddy for two holes on the back nine as a golf cart expired and no immediate replacement could be found. He finished his final round this trip with an eagle three on the final hole as a reward.

As a final word Century Chonburi on a weekday has to represent one of the better deals around.

Monday, Nov. 7,
Crystal Bay – Stableford

Div 1

1st Fergus Brennan (12) 39pts

2nd Jeff Bunn (09) 39pts

3rd Tony Giddon (12) 37pts

4th Paul Stanton (13) 35pts

Div 2

1st Jim McNeill (16) 39pts

2nd Richard Moore (20) 36pts

3rd Frank Hughes (17) 35pts

4th Jimmy Wolfe (17) 34pts

Well the headline was certainly the case for Fergus Brennan with a drought of almost 3 months without a win, but with a few tweaks to his R11 driver Fergus came storming back with two very impressive victories.

But what a difference a week makes, well 5 days to be more precise. On Monday Fergus stormed to the top of the leaderboard at Crystal Bay with a very impressive 39 points; then just 5 days later at the same course struggled to a very disappointing 25 points. So keep tweaking the driver Fergus, I’m sure normal service will be resumed as form is temporary, class is permanent.

It was good to see so many players on Monday at Crystal Bay where we played the C & B courses, with a very high standard of golf in both divisions. The highlight of Fergus’s victory was a very robust 22 points on the back 9, with Jim McNeil winning div 2 with an equally impressive 39 points, with a back 9 of 21.

Tuesday, Nov. 8,
Khao Kheow - Stableford

1st Phil Battah (14) 37pts

2nd Ian Bell (6) 35pts

3rd Mike Sanders (5) 35pts

4th Arnold Jones (15) 35pts

5th Jeff Bunn (09) 34pts

Our good friend and popular member Neil Bromley very kindly put up a bottle of wine for the nearest to the pin for our visit to the fabulous Khao Kheow course, and this was won by Jim McNeil, whose shot to the green in the first 4-ball was never bettered. Maybe the excitement of the win got to him as he missed a seemingly unmissable putt for his 2, however I’m sure a couple of glasses later he’d forgotten all about it.

With 17 players there was just the one division with Phil Battah being victorious with a good score of 37 points.

Thursday, Nov. 10,
Phoenix – Stableford

Div 1

1st Fergus Brennan (11) 40pts

2nd Mod Chaviraksa (12) 38pts

3rd Brian Dunbar (12) 37pts

Div 2

1st Richard Moore (20) 36pts

2nd Phill Battah (14) 36pts

3rd Arnold Jones (15) 35pts

Thursday saw an impressive turnout of 25 golfers go to our regular venue of Phoenix. The course is now really starting to look good and the hard work of the greenkeepers is starting to pay dividends.

Again with a very impressive 40 points Fergus was once again victorious in Div 1, with Richard Moore recording a 36 to take the spoils in Div 2.

Saturday, Nov. 12,
Crystal Bay - Stableford

Div 1

1st Jon Dean (11) 40pts

2nd Larry Simpson (11) 38pts

3rd Jeff Bunn (09) 36pts

Div 2

1st Phill Battah (14) 40pts

2nd Simon Tapster (16) 37pts

3rd Frank Hughes (17) 35pts

Our second visit of the week to Crystal Bay on Saturday saw us take on a course with some very tricky pin positions - well that’s my excuse for a pretty dismal 26! We once again had 2 divisions with Jon Dean winning Div 1 with 40 points and Phil Battah shooting the same score to win Div 2.

Special mention must surely go to Richard Moore, who, on I think maybe the 5th green missed a fairly easy putt and in frustration hit the ground with his putter and in doing so the head sheared clean off. The rest of his round he used his recovery iron to putt out and still scored an impressive 32 points.

My golfer of the week was a tough decision this week, with 2 double winners both with impressive scores, but I think Fergus has just edged it and it is good to see him on the winner’s podium once more.

Niels & Bo on top at the Mountain

PSC golf from the Café Kronborg

Bo Cardwell, Dave Richardson & Niels Hansen.

Peter Blackburn

Monday,
November 7,
Mountain Shadow – Stableford

As predicted a week ago we were about to see an increase in numbers and sure enough it was necessary to obtain two more tee spots at Mountain Shadow for today’s competition. In actual fact we had a couple of golfers on the “reserve” list so it was very disappointing to have one golfer not show on the morning without prior notification, thus depriving someone of a spot in the field.

About two thirds of the field of 31 assembled at Caf้ Kronborg on yet another beautiful Pattaya morning and it was great to see some old faces back with us again. We welcomed back Susanne & Svend Gaarde from Denmark, Peter Hammond from the U.K., Ulf Larsson from Sweden, Don Richardson from Northern Ireland, Ernst Hansen from Denmark and Gordon Clegg on R & R from his job in Saudi Arabia.

After leaving the Kronny right on time at 0815 hrs we arrived at the course 43 minutes later to find that it was in great shape with the greens as slick as ever and putting from above the hole on most greens was not the preferred option, as confirmed by Mike Gosden, myself and no doubt many others. The great weather continued throughout the day and even after a couple of drink stops it was a four hour and fifteen minute round.

Scoring was easy for a few and difficult for many on this testing layout and a count back to determine the winner of A Flight saw Niels Hansen (22 point back nine) victorious over Ken “let’s hear it for” Bernek (20 point back nine), both having 40 points. Dr Paul Cardwell finished third with a fine 39 points with Don Richardson fourth on 36 points and Ted Morris in fifth place with 34 points.

Bo “Mum to be” Cardwell easily won the B Flight with a terrific 42 points with Kjeld Ravn 5 points further back in second spot. Graham Buckingham was third with 36 points and a three way count back for fourth & fifth saw Jan Lovgreen (16 point back nine) come out ahead of Ulla Ravn (15 point back nine). All three had 32 points and Gordon Clegg (13 point back nine) was the one who just missed out.

A Flight (0-19)

1st Niels Hansen (15) 40pts

2nd Ken Bernek (16) 40pts

3rd Paul Cardwell (14) 39pts

4th Don Richardson (11) 36pts

5th Ted Morris (14) 34pts

B Flight (20+)

1st Bo Cardwell (40) 42pts

2nd Kjeld Ravn (23) 37pts

3rd Graham Buckingham (24) 36pts

4th Jan Lovgreen (22) 32pts

5th Ulla Ravn (35) 32pts

Near Pins: 5th Ted Morris; 8th Dick Braimbridge; 15th Martyn Topham; 17th Jean Claude L’Hoste

Long Putts: 9th Bo Cardwell; 18th Niels Hansen

The Compass Cap was well won by Svend Gaarde and Deefa the Dog was present to collect lots of donations to charity from the Kronny Crew.

Thursday, Nov. 10, Crystal Bay A & B – Stableford

Once more we had very close to a full field as there were 31 golfers signed up for today’s competition at the beautiful Crystal Bay course. Unfortunately there was a late cancellation due to sickness, however Caf้ Kronborg was very busy as we assembled for the day’s golf. We were happy to welcome Andre & Annie Barril from France, Maurice Herbergs from Holland and Finn Klarkson & Arne Fuglholt from Denmark.

Heading off down Highway 3 in four mini vans we encountered some fairly heavy traffic at first but soon made up time and arrived at the Resort 45 minutes later. It was reasonably busy and there was a short wait but we managed to get our first group away 30 minutes early at 0930 hrs. Once more the weather was terrific although very hot at times and we found the course in great shape with very well prepared greens. There were patches of water in a few spots on the fairways but all in all a great golf course in excellent nick.

The groups in front of us did not slow us up at all and we completed the front nine (B) in just over two hours. After a much needed 10 minute drink break at the half way mark we proceeded on A nine and completed the full round in the good time of four hours & twenty minutes.

There were some fairly good scores on the day, particularly in the A Flight which was won by last start winner Niels Hansen with 38 points. A count back was necessary to decide second & third places with Don Richardson (21 point back nine) edging out Mike Winfield (18 point back nine), both having 37 points. Your writer made a welcome return to the podium and finished fourth with 36 points and the returning Takeshi Hakozaki got fifth spot with 34 points.

Thirty six points was good enough for Bent Moeller to win the B Flight and in another count back to determine second and third Kjeld Ravn (19 point back nine) beat Jan Lovgreen (17 point back nine), both finishing with 34 points. J C L’Hoste took out fourth spot with 32 points while a three way count back to decide fifth saw Ulla Ravn (18 point back nine) finish ahead of Finn Klarkson (16 point back nine) and Annie Barrie (14 point back nine), all on 30 points.

A Flight (0-21)

1st Niels Hansen (15) 38pts

2nd Don Richardson (11) 37pts

3rd Mike Winfield (20) 37pts

4th Peter Blackburn (11) 36pts

5th Takeshi Hakozaki (14) 34pts

B Flight (22+)

1st Bent Moeller (28) 36pts

Champagne and Bloody Mary’s go down well at Emerald

The Backyard Golf Society

Birthday boy Dannie celebrates with the staff at Emerald.

After no write-ups for a few weeks it was good to see a quality turnout at the Backyard Golf Society’s round at Emerald Golf Course last Friday, November 11. With even the Chairman turning up and also being Dannie’s birthday everyone knew at 08:30 it was going to be a good day out.

Thirteen players, of which eleven were in all competitions, meant we required an extra tee time but as per usual the staff at the course accommodated us with no problems. With birthday boy Dannie and his buddies in the last group at least no one in front could be distracted by the corks flying out of the champagne bottles (the caddies were convinced they were large bottles of Spy Wine Cooler)!

On to the golf and the close competition resulted in Tony D beating Martin on count back with both having a very respectable 38 points. Bob G won nearest the pin and the skin results were as follows: Andy Oz (6), Martin (6), Neville (2), Tony D (1) and (3) rollovers for next week.

Thanks go to Candy and staff at Emerald Golf Course for supplying a birthday cake for Dannie even though everyone is pretty sure Oz had to put his hand in his pocket! As per usual it was down road afterwards where Yok put on a good party at Kisses Bar of which there should have been photos but the cameraman forgot his batteries.

Kiteboarding joins King’s Cup Regatta for first time

The Kiteboard Tour Asia (KTA) will host an invitation-only event at this year’s King’s Cup to celebrate 25 years of the legendary sailing regatta. The Phuket King’s Cup recognise the developing nature of the sport; kiteboarding is an exciting and popular new sailing discipline which is regulated by the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and is being considered as a future Olympic sport.

As many as 20 riders are expected to take part in this exhibition event, and the roster will comprise a mix of talented Asian kiteboarders and international pro riders from the World Tour, notably, Narapichit ‘Yo’ Pudla, two-time Asia champion from Thailand, and Aya Oshima, two-time Asia Freestyle/ Race champion and two-time Japanese Freestyle champion will head this exciting demonstration event.

An international ensemble also features Ken Nacor, Philippines champion and Asia number 2; Beijing Olympics silver medalist (windsurfing), Ho Chi Ho; Turkish KTA champion and Turkish Freestyle champion Taner Aykurt; and Kathryn Bogwardt, 2010 and 2011 KTA Ladies champion.

The sport already has a strong following in parts of Thailand with Hua Hin playing host to the international tour for the last two seasons and Pranburi the Thailand stop on the Kiteboard Tour Asia.

Willy Kerr, KTA Tour Director, said, ‘This year’s Phuket King’s Cup Regatta will feature a thrilling KTA Race event which will be a unique addition to the Phuket King’s Cup. There is a growing interest in the sport across much of South East Asia, and we’re very excited to be able to bring this spectacle to people who may not be familiar with the stylish, cool fun of the professional kiteboarding scene.’

Kevin Whitcraft, President of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee, said, ‘We’re delighted to welcome an exhibition event by Kiteboard Tour Asia at this year’s Phuket King’s Cup. This is a bold step for us in terms of broadening the Regatta, and we hope this new element will have very strong appeal to kiteboarding enthusiasts and a younger sailing audience. Kiteboarding continues to grow in popularity in Asia, and Thailand in particular offers an accessible and exciting opportunity for anyone who wishes to see pro kiteboarding events.’

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is now in its quarter centenary year, after first sailing in 1987 to celebrate His Majesty the King of Thailand’s 60th birthday. With the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King, the Regatta is organised by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organising Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.

2nd annual Poppy Golf Day tournament blooms ever brighter

Team winners with Keith Phillip the prize sponsor.

Derek Brook

Friday, November 11, Khao Kheow –
2-Ball Better Ball Stableford

As all good ideas, the idea for a Poppy Golf Day came about over a beer in Tropical Bert’s and thus we had the Inaugural Poppy Day Golf in 2010. The day proved such a success that the next year was discussed and then we realised that 2011 was not only the 90th birthday of the Royal British Legion, but also would be Poppy Golf on 11 November 2011, i.e. we could play on 11/11/11/11/11/11. That is 11 seconds past the 11th minute of the 11th hour - well you get the idea, and thus was formed the way ahead for 2011.

It was also decided that we would have Poppy Day golf tournaments in Pattaya, Korat, Chiang Mai and Bangkok all at the same time. Three went ahead but I am sure all realise that Bangkok in the present climate was unable to play, but will be having their day belatedly on the 5th of February 2012 and it promises to be a cracker of an event.

The third placed team accept their prizes from Max.

The team got busy and Graham MacDonald, President of The Royal British Legion Thailand, was given the (easy!) job of organising major sponsorship, and after a long haul the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) came on board as title sponsors and Royal London 360 and MBMG also agreed to be major sponsors. Now we had lift-off and could get things going.

The scribe then got things underway and Khao Kheow was selected as the course and Khun Surapol was contacted and we arranged to ‘Buy The Course’, so we could have a Shotgun Start on 11 November at, yes you guessed, 11/11 etc. Then it rained and rained and rained, most of the courses here were awash and Khao Kheow was severely hit. We went up there several times and a month before we played the competition the course was not in good condition. However Khun Surapol said that give it a dry week and the course would be fine.

The days went on and as the 11th approached it was obvious we were going to have a full house, and as we got to Khao Kheow early on the morning of the competition, the course was in fine shape and the weather was great and the numbers were what we wished them to be. Max was there even earlier putting out the sponsor banners and then at the desk booking in the players, helped by Matt and Dot. The day was well in swing as the players turned up, all 145 of them, and then we were off.

The Chairman, Derek Brook (center) presents special medals from The Royal British Legion to tournament winners Les Charles & Barry Oats.

With 2 groups of players on all the tees it was nice to see that the pace of play was very good and it was not till we met the par 3’s that we had some back up. This was soon overcome however. The Course was in good condition but you could see that in places the heavy rains had taken their toll, however the fairways were fine and the greens were fast and tricky with a fair bit of ‘rough trouble’.

The island green was the most backed up, however we had the special on this hole and it was a Cameron Special Golf Bag, Thanks to Mark Cameron. Past this hole over and it was into the hot shower and a relaxation before we hit the traffic on the way back in our effort to reach Amari’s Tavern by The Sea where the evening function was to take place.

On arriving at the venue it was very obvious that this year nearly all the players had gone back there as it was very full and we were bursting at the seams. The buffet was laid out and the players and guests were tucking in. We had 165 officially but I suspect there were one or two more. I thank the Amari for their kindness and their sponsorship of the night. The food was also the finest quality and was well received by all.

The strongest team at Khao Kheow.

Before we get into the results it is only right to thank our Sponsors as without them we could not hold such a prestigious tournament. First to Royal Bank of Scotland who were our title sponsors, to Royal London 360 and MBMG our major sponsors, also to Top Cat, guess who?, and to Pattaya Reality who gave generously. We also thank Khao Kheow Country Club, Cameron Golf, The Amari, Tesco Lotus, HSBC, Boots and many others who also gave unselfishly. Thank you all and if I missed you please accept my apologies. However I must mention Colin Davis of Lewinski’s who always supports us with their golfers.

A very special thanks also to our V.I.P.’s who also attended. First to Major General Winai, 14 Military Circuit Commander, and to Major Surin who both played in my four-ball, and made the round a pleasure, and later joined us at the Amari. To David Kneeshaw and Steve Noon from Royal London 360 and of course ‘Top Cat’ himself.

Scorers busy at work.

The prizes looked fine and particularly the trophies ,sponsored by ‘The Sons of the Andrew’ alias George, Roy and Kevin. Thanks to all the prize sponsors and in particular Keith who was the first prize sponsor. Then it was into the presentation where the Chairman, yours truly, and the President, Graham MacDonald, said a few words and thanked the sponsors.

So to the team prizes and we start with the strongest team, and that was Kevin Wild and Jack Robertson and they won The Standard Bearers Prize presented by Richard Holmes. The other results were as follows:

The runners-up with George and Roy ‘The Sons of Andrew’.

1st Les Charles & Barry Oats 52pts

2nd Kanaka Serm & Chop Daprakorn 48pts

3rd Derek Brook & Tom Cotton 47pts

4th Patrick Brown & Graham Hisket 46pts

5th Joe Benesin & Jean-Claude Coulon 45pts

6th Peter Ranvert & Lasse Laks 45pts

Long Putts: Al Laurie, Allan Tranekear

Near Pins: Peter Lenory, John Bartley, Mike Gaussa, Lasse Laks, David Kneeshaw, Dan Meijer, Lester

With the presentation over we watched a very fine Powerpoint presentation on The Royal British Legion and the Remembrance observance that was produced by Bert Elson, and held the attention of the audience until it came to an end. Silence reigned and that is hard in these circumstances. A very fine and moving presentation.

We finished the evening with the raffle by Reg and Dot and then we could relax in the knowledge that we had had a fine day and hopefully reached our aims. Until next year - T.T.F.N.

Pattaya Cricket Club dominates Siam C.C.

Pattaya Cricket Club and Siam C.C. players pose for a group photo at the Horseshoe Point ground in Pattaya, Saturday, November 12.

Pattaya Cricket Club continued their impressive start to the season with a dominant display against Siam C.C. last weekend at Horseshoe Point.

Saturday saw Siam C.C. win the toss and elect to bat in a 35 over game but the PCC bowlers immediately intimidated the batsmen with fast and hostile opening spells from Jack and Usman. Siam C.C. opener Brett Taylor realized as soon as the second ball of the day crashed into his helmet and lifted him off his feet how quick and accurate the opening bowlers of PCC were.

Nadeem (5) soon departed caught at short leg and Brett (13) followed fending a rising delivery off the glove to the keeper. A double bowling change saw wickets fall at alarming regularity as SCC were reduced to 51 for 7. Jock Tuluk’s experience saw him steady the innings before running out of partners to finish with a well constructed 40 and SCC were all out for 116.

Sodhi was the pick of the bowlers for the second week running with figures of 1/14 from 7 overs and Andy Emery and Debdas each collected 3 wickets a piece.

The total was never going to be enough despite PCC reversing the batting order and Yasir being out first ball. Earl Brown made the most of his promotion in the order to craft a patient 20 from 49 balls. It took him 24 balls to open his account, 2 of which were defended off his sun burnt head, the result of which only improved his northern ginger appearance. Sunny increased the tempo with a rapid 55 not out which included the biggest six ever seen at the ground and PCC eventually won by 6 wickets in a little more than 21 overs.

Sunday’s T20 game was the turn of the PCC batsmen to show off their skills and no SCC bowler was spared in the onslaught. Bindu (49), Jack (50 ret.) and Usman (51 ret.) all scored at alarming rates and ably supported by the batsmen at the other end PCC posted a total of 245 for 5.

This time PCC reversed the bowling order and Earl Brown, sporting two eggs on his head, once again jumped at the opportunity by clean bowling Phil Bond first ball of the innings. It went somewhat downhill from there and he now responds to the description of team ‘all rounder’, but all players know that is made in reference to his shape rather than ability. Don’t tell EB.

Carl Taylor (27) and Mike Hoolihan (39 no) ensured a spirited attempt to chase an improbable victory target but SCC lost by a mere 121 runs.

The result capped an end to another highly successful weekend of cricket after which the PCC captain Simon Philbrook commented, “it is wonderful just having to turn up and set the field and then watch as the boys annihilate the opposition”.

PCC Thoroughbreds (over 45’s) play the British Club of Bangkok this Sunday at Horseshoe Point starting at 11 a.m. and all are welcome for what promises to be a very social friendly game of cricket.
