Pattaya workers are finally replacing drainage
pipes running under Soi 6/1.

For more than a decade, North Pattaya’s Soi 6 neighborhood had its own local
geyser, at least during heavy rain storms.
Pattaya workers are finally replacing drainage pipes running 500 meters
under Soi 6/1 and ending on Beach Road and the corner next to a
long-standing cafe. For years, diners sat at the open-air restaurant and
watched as storm water shot high into the air from the drainage gate there.
Water frequently ran about 50 cm. deep at the foot of Soi 6.
Contractor K Sky Co. is now ripping up the old, small pipes and replacing
them with larger versions. Once complete, the work should also help preserve
Pattaya Beach at Soi 6, where flood waters raced down the two sois and
carved huge tracts out of the sand there.
The project began in June and is causing traffic to back up. Work is about
50 percent complete and is scheduled to end in September.
It is part of a 400 million baht budget being used to fix drainage areas
throughout the city to tackle flooding.
