Political billboards are
starting to pop up around town as the election draws near.
Last week, Mr. Sujarit Pajchimanand, Governor of
Chonburi, presided over the registration of candidates for seats in
Parliament at the Provincial Hall in Chonburi.
There were 6 former MPs from the Chart Thai Party, and one new candidate.
This was the first team to register.
There were three former MPs from the Democrats, one former candidate and 3
new candidates.
The campaigning has not yet become intense as the candidates have just
received their registration numbers.
This year, former MP Uthai Phimjaichon, is not running for re-election and
is thus causing the competitiveness to lack some of the spice it had in the
past.
People are keeping a close watch on election district Number 1 as they feel
there might be a chance for the Democrats to sway the electorate. As for the
other two districts, political pundits feel there will be no surprises or
dark horses.
The main platforms of both parties are the municipal needs of Chonburi.
Public utilities are a hot issue and the Beach Road is another much debated
subject.
Sonthaya Khunpleum of the Chart Thai Party will be standing on the platform
of the past accomplishments of his group.
Political observers believe that the Democrats will emphasise clarity and
fairness in the election process.
