Coast Guard catches smugglers
Thailand’s Coast Guard was able to arrest the captain
and crew of a smuggling vessel selling contraband to fishing boats in
Prajuab Khiri Khan, Rayong and Chonburi provinces in the Gulf of
Thailand, after intercepting a radio communication between a large oil
tanker and a smaller boat named ‘Norng A’.
The Coast Guard reacted quickly when they overheard the radio
communication, which instructed the smaller boat to pick up a certain
amount of smuggled oil. Setting up a ‘sting’ operation, the Coast Guard
was able to pounce on the smugglers just after the transaction took
place.
When they caught the ship and its crew, they found out they were not
only smuggling oil, but many other kinds of contraband, including
radios, televisions, video players and tobacco products. They also
learned that the boat had been plying its illegal trade between 18-20 of
October of this year.
The smugglers were charged with bringing taxable goods into the country
and selling them illegally.
