Studying headaches
Chronic headaches can occur in people of any age. It is
often difficult to determine the cause and some people cannot be cured of
this distressing cycle. Teenagers are especially susceptible to chronic
headaches.
Studies done in the United States show that the average teenager suffers a
severe headache approximately twice a month. Headaches occur more often in
teenagers who come from problem families.
There are not yet any statistics on the occurrences of headaches in
Thailand, but it is thought that the rapid industrialisation and increasing
stress of today’s world are major factors causing severe headaches in
Thailand.
Most cases of headache in teenagers are of the “migraine” type. Headaches
may also be symptoms of other diseases. Headaches are often accompanied by
fever.
Physicians say some of the following may cause headaches and thus this
behaviour should be avoided. Not eating regularly: Many teenagers who are
trying to lose weight will often sip meals or not eat a balanced diet. This
can cause low blood sugar which can cause a headache.
Use of drugs and Narcotics: As most drugs work on the central nervous system
and the brain they may cause confusion, indecision and bad headaches. Any
use of drugs should only be under a doctor’s supervision.
Lack of sleep: This may be due to intense study or coming home very late at
night. If this is compounded by use of alcoholic beverages it can lead to
chronic migraine.
Another cause of headache may be spoiled or improper food. Sometimes people
cannot tell if food contains bacteria as it has not ‘gone off’ enough to
have any odour. Another hidden cause is food allergies. People may be
allergic to a food but not know it. Eating these foods can cause headache.
If you suffer from chronic headache, the best course is to see your doctor.
