Amphetamines -
a growing menace
Amphetamine abuse has become so widespread that it is
time for all sectors of Thai society to join hands in the prevention and
treatment of those who use the substance.
There is a great misunderstanding that Amphetamine use gives on energy and
stamina to study for exams or to work more efficiently. What many don’t know
is that when the stimulant effects of the drug wear off, one suffers memory
loss, intense fatigue, and in bad cases, hallucinations which are
indistinguishable from clinical schizophrenia.
From studies done by the public health department there are now more than
one million two hundred thousand regular amphetamine users in Thailand.
Studies show that a large portion of these users are students and young
people.
The Department of Public Health is now initiating a project to help young
people who have problems with amphetamine abuse. This will be in the form of
clinics and counselling centres to help young people with abuse problems.
There will also be sexual counselling and proper use of medication.
The problems addressed by this project reflect the changes in Thai society
and the lack of time parents have to counsel their children.
