Pattaya police have launched rotating checkpoints on area
roads to catch people violating traffic laws.
Lt. Purachet Rattanawichit launched the daily checkpoints
Feb. 8 with 10 other officers in front of the Grand Sole Hotel on Second
Road.
The point, he said, is to move the checkpoints around the
city to catch those driving recklessly, without helmets or while
intoxicated. By moving the checkpoints around, people never know where they
might encounter a police stop and, hopefully, will drive better.
Purachet said traffic violations are getting worse in
Pattaya and simple public-service advertising or driver’s education classes
are no longer effective in getting people to comply with traffic laws.
He also noted that Thailand’s Road Traffic Act rewards
good drives who have not been in an accident or received a ticket with
15,000 baht insurance coverage for medical expenses suffered in a future
accident.
