Chonburi celebrated its 55th annual Buddhist Lent
Parade, highlighted by the presentation of 140 candles to temples in the
province and scholarships to 150 children.
The July 12 procession around Buddha Sihing Hall was
organized by Chonburi provincial and city governments, Chonburi Cultural
Office, and Chonburi Young Buddhists Association.
Gov. Wichit Chatpaisit said the traditional parade
was tweaked this year to adapt better to modern times. Schools were
invited to help decorate candles for a competition, which was judged by
parade gallery members.
Technology and Prapassorn Wittaya School won the top
prize, followed by runners up from the Chonburi municipal government and
Chonrat Amarung School. Chonburi Sukabot and Sathaporn schools won
consolation prizes.
Sponsors also presented 150 scholarships to primary
and secondary school children. Schools participating in the parade also
received 2,000 baht each.
Finally, 140 candles were presented and donated to
temples throughout the province. Fifty were given to temples in
Pattaya’s Banglamung District, 62 to temples in Sriracha, 20 in
Sattahip, 14 in Nong Yai, 52 to central Chonburi and the rest to other
provincial districts.
