Chonburi officials urged good Buddhists to use this
year’s lent period to give up alcohol.
Deputy Gov. Pongsak Preechawit and representatives
from the Chonburi Public Health Office, Chonburi Buddhism Office, Region
2 Area Excise Tax Office, Office of Education, Chonburi Provincial
Police and In-Panya School said forsaking booze during the three month
period would also honor HM the King.
Drinking alcohol can cause both health and social
consequences, Pongsak said. Alcohol is involved in more than 50 percent
of all road accidents and is a leading cause of domestic violence.
During lent in 2010, a survey found 1.8 million of Thailand’s 67 million
citizens planned to give up alcohol.
