Officials ship homeless people
off to Nonthaburi to receive better care.
Vittaya Yoondorn
Pattaya social workers swept 26 homeless people off
Pattaya Beach, relocating them to the Nonthaburi Home for the Destitute.
The Jan. 11 morning sweep by the city Social Welfare
Department and Chonburi Social Security and Health Development Office
scooped up 15 men, three transvestites, six women and two children. One
child, just 9 months old, caught the attention of social workers, who bought
milk for the homeless infant and its mother.
Municipal enforcement officers who accompanied the social
workers complained that the homeless often resorted to begging, annoying
tourists and residents of Pattaya. By shipping them off to Bangkok, they
will receive vocational training and education to pursue a job.
