The Ministry of
Interior and Pattaya to help street kids
Due to Thai society’s change from the extended family to
the nuclear family system, and the pressures put on these families by the
state of the economy, parents can not spend enough time with their children.
These pressures often lead to the break-up of families. Children are left
without guidance and good examples of behaviour. The result is they often
become street kids. This is increasing and is becoming a problem to society.
The Ministry of the Interior is instituting a program to see that these
children are given protection, guidance and better quality of life.
Pattaya has begun a program using volunteer teachers and 10 officials, who
will be ‘big brothers and sisters’. They will be working with the children
who often congregate on Pattaya’s beaches.
Their first step will be to get to know the young people and gain their
trust. Officials then hope that young people in need of counselling of other
help will feel free to come to them without fear. If this is successful, the
next step will be to give these young people basic education.
It is hoped that this program will be successful and the city asks for all
Pattayans to give their support.
