Phra Khru See Sara
Chaiya-Atta-Saro is an example of what monks are supposed to be.
Phra Khru See Sara Chaiya-Atta-Saro, the Abbott of Khao
Khantamart Temple, is devoted to his sacerdotal duties. He was recently
awarded the prestigious Norma award by the government of Japan for his
encouragement of reading among villagers. He has also been responsible for
the building of a basic public health centre in the village, he was
instrumental in the building of a chapel for the temple school, and was a
prime mover behind the brining electricity to the Ranang Jomtien school in
Sattahip.
Phra Khru See Sara Chaiya-Atta-Saro is an example of what monks are supposed
to be. He does not merely preside at ceremonies but takes responsibility for
the welfare of the people, sees to their basic needs, and emphasises
education, remembering that in the past monks were the source of both
religious and academic education of the people. Unlike many monks today, he
is an expert on the Pali Language, the language of the Buddhist Scriptures.
He has been a monk for 23 years, having taken the vows at age twenty, and
has been on many important Committees of the Sangha Council.
