A Russian man facing eight years in jail at home for selling
steroids from Thailand was captured hiding out in Jomtien Beach.
Chonburi Immigration Police and soldiers from the 14th Military Circle
apprehended Igor Cherkesov, 47, at a gym on Soi Wat Bunkanchanaram Dec. 3.
Officers said he had only a photocopy of his passport on him at the time of
his arrest and that it had expired in March 2013. His visa had expired
nearly two years ago.
The arrest came after the Russian embassy asked authorities to arrest the
accused smuggler wanted on an Interpol alert. He faces drug charges carrying
an eight-year term in Russia.
Police said Cherkesov confessed he had bought steroids from a Thai agent to
sell back home. He was charged with smuggling muscle-enhancing substances
and immigration offenses before being processed for deportation.
