Stiffer penalties for child prostitution
A bill to prevent prosti-tution is now being drafted and
legislators will present it to His Majesty the King for Royal Consideration
soon. The main clause in this new law is to prevent child prostitution which
is currently a rampant problem in Thailand and is ruining the country’s
image. This new law is being drafted as the old law of 1960 is felt to be
ineffective.
The real teeth in this new law is that realising that children are not
responsible, the law will penalise the parents of the child, the pimps and
the customers. The penalties will be increased greatly for those dealing in
child prostitution. The Social Welfare Department is backing this new law
100%.
The penalty for having sex with people under 18 will be a prison sentence.
This law applies to foreigners also.
