Miss World Beauty Pageant threatened
Miss Thailand World, Pattaya’s own Cindy Burbridge, will need to watch
her step, as will all the other Miss World contestants when the pageant
is held in Bangalore, India next month.
A militant Indian farmer’s group, one of several various women’s rights
organizations protesting the pageant, has vowed to set fire to the venue
to keep the Miss World Beauty Pageant from being staged.
“We will set it ablaze. There is no way we will allow the contest to be
held here,” Nanjundaswamy, head of the farmer’s group in Karnataka, told
the media. The protesters have been claiming that the pageant will
degrade women and insult Indian culture.
Other groups have vowed even more drastic measures to protest the world
event. Several women’s groups have threatened mass suicide by setting
themselves ablaze if organizers go ahead with plans to stage the
pageant.
Indian authorities are downplaying the threats, and have promised strict
security throughout the event.
