Marine regulators, researchers and water sports operators came
together to analyze Pattaya’s marine-safety problems and create action
plans to improve safety and restore tourist confidence.
The Sept. 29 seminar by the Pattaya Marine Department and Thailand
Research Organizations Network is sponsored by National Research Council
of Thailand with a 2 million baht budget.
Thongchai Phongvichai, director of the ship-registration bureau, and
Raywat Phothileang, director of Bali Hai Pier, met with speedboat
operators and jet ski vendors to address issues of accidents and
prevention. Deputy Mayor Ronakit Ekasingh presided over the meeting.
The objective of this seminar was to study and analyze problems of
marine activities, risks and safety management of marine tourism.
Participants analyzed conflict marine-tourism activities to determine
useful coastal zones in Pattaya Bay. The session also reviewed
international marine-safety plans and draft proposals to improve safety
management.
Results of the analysis will be used to develop three plans covering
risk analysis, speedboat operations and improving regulations.
Projects will be presented to the Pattaya City Council to solve problems
faced by tourists and restore the reputation as much as possible. The
projects are scheduled to completed by July 2015, with research done by
the Marine Department and Mahidol University’s Engineering Department.
