“Jewel Fisher”
gang busted
Pattaya Police received a report from Ms. Mali
Sornphuang, the 40 year old widowed owner of the Naklua Dynamo Store, that
she had been extorted by the ‘Jewel Fisher” gang in South Pattaya
After investigations, police arrested Mr. Chamnan Satiyasirikosol, 55, and
Ms. Ambhan Chantamart, 32, members of the alleged gang. The two were in
possession of one loose blue sapphire and a sapphire and diamond ring.
Mali Sornphuang told police that she had been the unwilling victim of a
confidence scam. Chamnan had apparently learned that Mali was a widow, and
used his charm to woo her into accepting a fake blue saffire which he
claimed to be worth 100,000 baht. She became suspicious of his attentions
and took the stone to be appraised, where she learned that it was indeed a
fake.
When the relationship went sour, Chamnan asked her to return the saffire.
When Mali couldn’t produce the gem, Chamnan and an accomplice, Oan, reported
her to the police and demanded payment in kind.
Police initially arrested Mali, but when they learned the truth to the
story, pursued and eventually caught up with Chamnan and Ambhan. They
accomplished this by setting up a sting operation, where Mali would give
Chamnan the 165,000 baht he demanded for the fake gem. As soon as he
accepted the money, police made their arrest.
The leader of the alleged gang, Oan, avoided capture and is still at large.
Ambhan, meanwhile, claimed that she had nothing to do with the scam and only
accompanied Chamnan to retrieve what she told police were her sister’s
jewels. Not believing her, police have detained both parties for further
investigation.
