US Navy repairs Pattaya pier
The temporary pier the Tourism Authority of Thailand
built for tourist boats a year ago has been steadily deteriorating over
time. The gangways where tourists embark and disembark became rickety and
dangerous, but since the city has no budget for a new pier, no repairs were
instigated locally.
The Aircraft Carrier USS Nimitz and a group of frigates regularly use this
pier when on shore leave, and did so for two weeks on their last visit here.
The ship’s commander noticed the condition of the pier and gangways and
became concerned that tourists and locals might be injured using this
dangerous pier. On their return to base, they sent a letter to the Rotary
Club of Jomtien/Pattaya in order to join in a co-operative effort to make
needed repairs.
Pattaya City replied to these good intentions and allowed the US Navy to
hire a Thai contractor to repair the gangways and steel railings. The pier
is now safe and is a tourist relaxation area where people may fish, sit in
the sun and watch the night-life.
